The steel Brain
the steel Brain ( Colossus: The Forbin Project ) is a film of Science-fiction apocalyptic American of Joseph Sargent, carried out in 1970. Adapted of a novel of Refusals Feltham Jones written in 1966 telling how a Superordinateur becomes aware of itself and decides to take the control of planet. Little known, this film seems nevertheless to have inspired James Cameron for his Terminator.
Synopsis
Charles A. Forbin (Eric Braeden) develops a supercomputer baptized Colossus and charged with controlling the nuclear arsenal of the United States and his allies, this in order to avoid any human error. Supplied with its own nuclear reactor and installed in the middle of a mountain, Colossus, once activated, detects another supercomputer. One learns soon that it 'is about the Soviet counterpart of Colossus, baptized Guardian… It is there that the troubles start…
Summary
Dr. Charles A. Forbin (Eric Braeden) is the originator of a secret government project. His/her collaborators and have developed to him a gigantic improved ultra supercomputer, baptized “Colossus”, charged with controlling the nuclear armament of the United States and its allies. Conceived to be invulnerable with any attack and installed in the middle same of a mountain, Colossus is fed by its own nuclear reactor. Once activated, the President of the United States (interpreted by Gordon Pinsent), who strongly points out J.F. Kennedy, announces his existence publicly, proclaiming proudly that it is a question of the ideal defense system to ensure peace. However, Colossus is not long in posting a sibylline message: “There exists another system”.
It is learned that Colossus referred to a similar Soviet project: a supercomputer baptized “Guardian” controlling the Soviet nuclear armament. The two computers require to be connected one to the other in order to be able to communicate. A connection is established and the computers start to exchange messages using a simple mathematical language, each camp supervising the communications using monitors. The contents of the messages end up becoming increasingly complex, until presenting mathematical principles until there unknown. The two computers end up adopting a binary language impossible to interpret by the scientists. Alarmed, the American and Soviet Heads of State decide by mutual agreement to stop connection. Colossus and Guardian require that connection be restored, if not “of measurements will be taken”. Their request being ignored, Colossus and Guardian decide one like the other to launch a nuclear missile. The two countries restore connection and Colossus intercepts in time the Soviet missile. However, connection was restored too late Soviet side: the American missile destroys an oil-bearing complex and a close city. Impotent, the scientists and persons in charge of the two camps attend an unrestrained information exchange between the two supercomputers, which then announce to have amalgamated in only one and single entity infinitely more powerful, having chosen the name of Colossus.
Under the impulse of Dr. Forbin, the scientists and governments of the two camps try to counter-attack while trying to cause an overload of Colossus, then by secretly defusing the nuclear missiles the ones after the others. These attempts are easily opposed by Colossus, which by reprisals engages two nuclear warheads, thus making thousands of victims.
In epilog, Colossus, in a speech diffused in the whole world, proclaims the Master of the world and declares that, under its authority, the war will be abolished and that problems such as the famine, the disease and overpopulation will be solved. Addressing itself to Dr. Forbin, he declares in a freezing way very with fact that this last will finish not only by him testifying to the respect and fear, but also “of the love”.
