The sky can wait (film, 1943)
the sky can await ( Heaven Can Wait ) is an American film of Ernst Lubitsch left in 1943.
Synopsis
A man knocks spontaneously on the door of the devil. The elegant owner hells…Just after his death, Henry Van Cleve, persuaded to deserve fire eternal, presents himself near the Devil and requests his entry in hell. This one, charming but overflowed, seems dubious fate to hold for its visitor and takes time to listen to its history. Or rather that of the women of her life. The man indeed evokes his middle-class life, exalté character and show-off, of a bad confusing faith, stopping on the various variations with morals which marked out its course.
Excluded the scenes in hell, a kind of big room of waiting, all the scenes of film are held one day of birthday of the hero.
Comment
the sky can await follows two of greatest successes of Ernst Lubitsch than are Ninotchka with Greta Garbo and To Be gold Not to Be , last service of Carole Lombard. Its control of the sentimental comedy is thus tested. With the difference however of these two films, this one is deprived of political concerns. It is cut off in the intimate, family sphere and exploits a moral and social register more. Jewel of light humor and tenderness, the Sky can wait is the last great success critical and public of Lubitsch.
