The round Library
the round Library , ex- library of the children and the young people of the Plain , still known under the names of the Joy by the books , of the name of association founder, library of the children of Clamart even library of Clamart , is a Bibliothèque for children of world famous, founded by association the Joy by the books in the popular quarters the plain with the Petit-Clamart.
It is thanks to the patronage of Anne Gruner-Schlumberger that the library opened in 1965. The building, built by the architect Gerard Thurnauer, member of the Workshop of Montrouge, is registered with the additional Inventory of the historic buildings since 1993. Privileging spaces of modest size, the building consists of round parts on one level in the middle of the high buildings of the district. Most of the pieces of furniture of reading is due to Alvar Aalto; they were selected for their perfect adaptation to the function and the place. Furniture is the subject from now on of a classification and is thus protected like inheritance from the 20th century. In the beginning, three librarians specialized constituted the funds of this establishment, of which two had been formed with the merry Hour: Read Encrevé, Christine Chatain and Geneviève Patte which will direct the Joie by the books until March 2001.
A report of the photographer Martine Franck does the one of Life , the empress of Japan even visit the library. The library quickly acquired a reputation for its innovating Pédagogie: responsibilisation, opening on the world.
In 1972 the State deals with the operation of the library and association the Joy by the books which is dissolved and which will become National center of the book for child . January 1st 1997, the Library of the Joy by the books is attached to the Direction of the book and the reading (DLL), body of the Ministère of the Culture. The DLL charges association with the Amis of the Joy by the books (AJPL) of managing administratively and financially the Joie by the books .
The library had to cease its activities, on a purely conservatory basis, the February 4th 2006, causing the protest of the inhabitants of the district. The collective “ So that our cities live! ” then occupied the building, during two weeks, requiring its reopening. The February 18th 2006, the library reopened its doors.
Since April 2007, the library became an experimental associative structure, from now on managed by the association “the library of the children of Clamart” chaired by Geneviève Patte, while the library takes the name of the round Library . This new project proposes to develop a place of life for all the children of the district and beyond. The initiatives of the children are privileged to make them take an active part in the life of the library. The library accommodates the families, the teachers, the professionals of early childhood, etc association establishes bonds of partnership with the local associations and institutions so that the reading of the children become always more the business of all. The team acts “out the walls” to join those which are furthest away from the reading and the book.
A council of orientation made up of professionals of childhood and book are charged to impel and follow the experiments undertaken near the inhabitants of the district of the Plain. The library attempts to create national and international exchanges around the evolution of the libraries for children.
The data bases and data-processing equipment were yielded to the town of Clamart which places at the disposal of association the funds thus acquired of the “Friends of the Joy by the Books”, like two assistants of library. This new project received the support of the DLL.
