the Point is a weekly Magazine French of general information, with the leading line of center-right. Its first number was published on September 25th 1972.
Its current, directing chairman of the publication is Franz-Olivier Giesbert former director of the drafting of the Nouvel Observateur then Figaro.
History
the Point was founded in 1972 by a team of journalists who had left, one year earlier, the drafting as a chief of the Express train then directed by Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber. The founder team of the Point was made up of Olivier Chevrillon (chairman), of the journalists: Claude Imbert, Jacques Duquesne, Pierre Billiards (journalist), Georges Suffert, Henri Trinchet, Robert Frank, of the person in charge of publicity and marketing Philippe Ramond, and of the administrator Michel Bracciali. Being based financially on the group Hatchet, of which the chairman is then Simon Nora, this team had recruited as of spring 1972 of the journalists - judged among most powerful - through the large titles of the Parisian press.
the Point initially misait on its capacity to renew the kind of the weekly magazine of information, the “news magazine”, of the type Newsweek or Time. In three years, the newspaper succeeded in reaching financial balance then with benefitting largely.
Successive shareholdings
After the victory of the left to the elections of 1981, the Point leaves the group Hachette, threatened to be nationalized; the executive team fears to lose her autonomy there. The newspaper integrates the group of cinema Gaumont, chaired by the richissime Nicolas Seydoux. In 1992, wishing to disengage itself, Nicolas Seydoux his shares to the Western Générale yields (founded by Jimmy Goldsmith and yielded in 1987 to the general Company of electricity CGE, which has also the Express train). In October 1995, CGE, become Alcatel-Alsthom, made contribution of its activities of press with STOCK communication, a subsidiary company of Havas, group of which Alcatel (chairman: Serge Tchuruk) becomes the principal shareholder.
In 1997, the businessman François Pinault, chairman of the holding Artémis and close to Jacques Chirac, takes the control of the Point . Claude Imbert, by parking continuity of the newspaper and of his line, remains one of the principal leader-writer S.
Key dates

September 22nd 1975 - Thanks to the increase in its audience and its advertizing revenues, the Point reached, as of its third year, its break-even point. It counts 150 collaborators.

February 25th 1982 - the company Gaumont repurchases 51% of the capital of the Point to Hachette (initial shareholder) and becomes thus the principal shareholder of the newspaper.

December 1985 - After the departure of Olivier Chevrillon, Jacques Duquesne, assistant editor of the drafting, are named general president-director.

September 1992 - the " General Occidentale" , subsidiary of Alcatel - Alsthom, acquires 40% of the capital. It becomes majority shareholder of the Point in September 1993. Creation of a GIE the Express train - the Point .

January 22nd 1994 - the Point presents its new formula: square back, new model, new logo, increased format, price in fall. The diffusion of the newspaper increases regularly.

January 29th 1994 - Launching of the first targeted edition of the Not : “The Point Universities and universities”, followed, in October 1995, by an edition Businesses in collaboration with Business Week .

December 1997 - Artémis (holding) (François Pinault) succeeds Havas as a majority shareholder of the weekly magazine.

September 2000 - Franz-Olivier Giesbert becomes director of the Point . Claude Imbert preserves the leading article.

January 2001 - the Point adopts a renovated version of its formula: new logo, widened format, reinforced pagination, new headings.
