The metropolitan Community of Montreal

The metropolitan Communauté of Montreal is an organization of regional management of the services to the population of the urban area of Montreal, Quebec. It was made up in June 2000 following the adoption of the Loi on the metropolitan Community of Montreal by the National Assembly of Quebec.

Functionality

The metropolitan Community of Montreal is an organization of planning, dialog, coordination and financing in the exercise of following competences:

  1. town and country planning;

  2. economic development;
  3. social housing;
  4. the equipment, infrastructures, services and activities in metropolitan matter;
  5. public transport;
  6. the metropolitan arterial network;
  7. the planning of the residual inventory management;
  8. the cleansing of the atmosphere;
  9. the cleansing of waste water.

Composition of the council

The council of the Community includes/understands 28 members:
  • the mayor of Montreal and thirteen members of the council of the city
  • the mayor of Laval and two members of the council of the city
  • the mayor of Longueuil and two members of the council of this city
  • four mayors resulting from the municipalities of the Northern crown of Montreal
  • four mayors resulting from the municipalities of the Southern crown of Montreal.
