The manufacturer

the manufacturer is a work of Lazar Markovich Lissitzky. It is about an assembly which mixes photographic elements (hand, compass, head), graphic elements (arrow, squaring, circle) and Typographie (XYZ).

Lissitzky composes a structured space, architectonic in which the face of the artist is placed. Superimposed in its eye, its hand traces a circle with the compass. The right eye of Lissitzky plays a big role in this composition: the eye of the artist becomes the witness of a construction: that of the circle representing the cycle of the life and the time which passes. One notices from the start the strong connotation of time, space and work. Two plans are distinguished. First is consisted of the face and the hand. Second is composed by system XYZ. The compass is the intermediate element which links the two plans. In a scientific language, the system approached by Lissitzky is a three-dimensional system represented graphically, XYZ respectively indicating the x-axes, ordered and depth. The traced circle indicates the measuring unit 1 valid for these three axes.

Thus the thick horizontal black line, above the head of the artist corresponds to the X-coordinates. The y-axis is given by the perpendicular vertical line, cut out in blank paper and graph paper; the same one is used by the architects, to draw their plans. The axis allotted to the third dimension, i.e. with the depth is not drawn physically. It hides in the oblique tension field (Z) which crosses the right eye of the artist, the slope of his shoulders and which lands in the angle in bottom on the right.

Through this arithmetic language, one distinguishes a worship from science, techniques and consequently, industry. A construction must be regarded as the whole of the elements gathered in a whole by a principle determined to constitute a unit, a system. Lissitzky glorifie control of the technique thus of the method to lead to the dedication of an idea, a project, a construction.

By cultivating the idea of control in each kind of work, we bring art closer to work. The concept of artist becomes synonymous with concept of Master. Any worker whatever his activity ceases as of the moment when it is inhabited desire to achieve his work to perfection, to be a workman, a craftsman to become a Master-creator.

It is the theory of value based on work: the value of an object is directly related to provided work. Basing itself on the theory constructivist, it raises the questions here relating to the role of art in the production and the transformations which it brings in the life, in the lifestyles. “ the artistic industry cultivated by artists of the applied art does not change the forms external of the lifestyle but the enjolive one only. The artistic control of the production by touching all the stages of the manufacture of the products transforms above all, the work itself connected to the production.
