The lower Rhine

The the lower Rhine (in Dutch: Nederrijn ), is a Rivière Dutchwoman, one of the principal arms of the delta of the the Rhine.

Cours

This branch of the Rhine forms the continuation of the Canal of Pannerden, starting from Angeren close to Arnhem, right before the place where the IJssel is detached towards north. From Wijk bij Duurstede, the lower Rhine is divided into two: the principal course is called Lek and the old course, now barred, is called Kromme Rijn.

Between Wageningen and Rhenen, the lower Rhine communicates with the Valleikanaal by the lock Grebbesluis .

History

Between 1530 and 1536, work took place to move the the Rhine with Arnhem. The city, which developed around the Ruisseau Midsummer's Day, preferred a situation directly on the Rhine, not only to stimulate its economic development, but also to improve its possibilities of defenses against the Spaniards during the Guerres of Gueldre.

Management of the flow

In order to better manage the water flow of the various branches of the Rhine, one built several threshold S in the lower Rhine. When the thresholds are closed, the flow of the lower Rhine is low, and the water flow of the IJssel is more important.

Transport

Six bridges span the lower Rhine: 4 with Arnhem, 1 with Heteren and with Rhenen. At five places, one can cross the river in vat.

See too

In Germany, the lower course of the Rhine which crosses the Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia is also called the lower Rhine ( Niederrhein ).
