The gallant Indies

the gallant Indies is certainly the scenic work most known of Jean-Philippe Rameau. It also constitutes the top like the Opéra-ballet, in a prolog and four entered, on a booklet of Louis Fuzelier.

Work was presented in 1735; it is the second composition of Branch for the scene, after the lyric Tragédie Hippolyte and Aricie . It did not comprise whereas three entries, the last having been added only a little later. This structure with variable geometry is allowed by the spirit of the opera ballet, or one does not speak about acts, but about entries, for marking well that the various parts have between them only one analogy set of themes, and do not constitute of anything a followed intrigue.

The kind had been invented by André Campra ( gallant Europe ) and Branch, in spite of the poverty and the improbabilities of the booklet, carries it to its apogee thanks to an admirable music which ensured him of very many representations during the 18th century. Whereas Campra told gallant stories in various European countries, Rameau exploits the same vein with success but research a little more Exotisme in of the very approximate Indies which are in fact in Turkey, in Perse, with the Peru or at the Indians of North America. The thin intrigue of these small dramas is especially used to introduce a “large spectacle” or the sumptuous costumes, the decorations, the machineries, and especially the Danse hold a crucial role. The Indies Galantes symbolize the carefree time, refined, dedicated to the pleasures and the galantery of Louis XV and his court.

This major work of the French lyric repertory was forgotten during more than one century and half. It is in 1925 that the 3rd entry ( Incas of Peru ) was taken again with the Op3era Comique and in 1957 that its integrality was given in scene to the royal opera of the Château of Versailles in the presence of the Queen of England, in official visit in France.
