The fourth best convention

In the Jeu of Bridge the convention fourth better is used with starts against a contract with no trumps.

It consists in starting chart the fourth better in a long color where an honor is held. Thus in a color fifth, with for example R8762, one starts of the 6.

If the started color does not contain honor, second the best is started.

If the started color contains only three charts and an honor one starts intermediate chart.

If the started color contains neither at least four charts, nor of honors, one starts larger. This technique is borrowed from the Anglo-Saxon who calls off it signal nothing .

Two restrictions on this convention:

When a sequence of at least three honors is had, one starts larger honor of the sequence

When one starts in the color named by the partner, one starts in par-odd

Regulate of eleven

This rule applies when the partner has just started his fourth the best.

One counts the number of charts above that the partner whom one sees with dead and in his play, one adds the row of the started chart to it, one withdraws the whole from 11 and one obtains the number of charts held by the informant higher than the chart of starts.

For example: Your test starts of the 7 of spade, it there dead holds 954 and you D103. You see 3 charts higher than the 7 (9 of died and your lady and 10). You thus deduce (11-10=1) whom the informant has only one chart higher than the 7 with spade.
