The carnic Alps

The the carnic Alps are a solid mass of the Eastern Préalpes Southerners. They rise between the Austria (the Tyrol of the east and Land of Carinthie) and the Italy (Province of Bolzano, Venezia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia).

In the broad sense, they are also a whole of the the Alps composed of the the Alps de Gailtal and Préalpes carnic. Their name comes from an old province of the Roman Empire, the Carnie ( Carnia ).

The Monte Coglians is the culminating point of the solid mass.

Geology

In geology, this solid mass made up powerful heights coral Récifs of 1300 meters is universally known. These mountains Calcaire S of the Paléozoïque are old of more than 400 million years (Carbonifère, Dévonien, Silurien), more than the Alps of the Mesozoic , and appeared in an area close to the equator which was with the dévonien on the side septentrional of the Africa, in a not very deep and hot sea.

The " Geo-Trail" connect certain mountain lanes rich in Fossile S and is the geological tourist way longest of Europe.

To the north of the solid mass, in the valley of Gailtal, the limit between the Adriatic plate passes and the Eurasian plate. It is prolonged on the one hand until the the Alps lépontines and on the other hand with the Karavanke.

The carnic Alps less join together grounds of step than the one hundred geological areas most important of the Earth. In Europe, spaces of formation of deep seas, continental edges, to Lagoon S and reefs of the primary era nowhere elsewhere were not also brought closer, so much so that one can test them of only one glance.

The conservation of the fossils is remarkable in spite of crumpling the multiples Plissement S of grounds. Geologists of the whole world regularly come to see this phenomenon on the spot.

History

The Karantanie, under the Carolingian , was populated as well Bavarois as of Slaves (Slovenien).

During the First World War, the face between the Empire Austro-Hungarian and the Italy was held along the carnic Alps. Today still, the traces of this war of the mountains are omnipresent. With Kötschach-Mauthen, while going to the Collar of Plöcken, there exists a museum and installations which emphasize the ruins of the fortifications.
