Around film
Raimu interprets there a baker all southernmost colors. The final scene where he addresses himself to Pomponnette, its unsteady she-cat, instead of his wife at her sides, belongs to the anthology of the cinema.
History of the text
Marcel Pagnol had written to a historiette intended for the cinema under the title the Baker Amable . Amable is a baker addicted to drink saved of the forfeiture by the love of a maidservant of inn which becomes its baker. This account was to become a film, but Pagnol lute a news of Jean Giono, the Woman of the baker , and decided to rather turn the history of this “poor fellow inhabited by a great love and which did not make any more bread because his wife had left”. It is the famous film of 1938, with Raimu in the role titrates, which made the admiration of Orson Welles.
The scenario is rather different from the violent account that Giono will insert in Jean Blue . The shepherds of Giono are proud males and savages who dance around large blazing infernos; the villagers come to the fists; the marquis is a mysterious lord accompanied by sensual creatures.
Pagnol had already adapted three works of Giono: Jofroi of Maussan gave the film Jofroy in 1933, One of Baumugnes became Angèle in 1934 and Regain was carried to the screen under this same name in 1937. the Woman of the baker is thus the last film of the “Giono period”.
In 1943, Giono, in squabble with Pagnol, adapts its news for the theater. The baker, given up by his wife, tries at the beginning to be made pass for dead so “erasing the life” and it benefits from it to say its four truths to all the village.
After the Second world war, Pagnol adapts its own film for the scene and a troop of young actors gave a single representation of it. In 1985, its part is taken again by Jerome Savary with Michel Galabru in the role of the baker. In 1998, a new version of film of Pagnol is turned for television by Nicolas Ribowski with Roger Hanin.
