The the Western Scheldt (Dutch: Westerschelde ) is an arm of the sea of Zealand. Contrary to the the Eastern Scheldt, the Grevelingen and the Haringvliet, it was not barred at the time of work of the Plan Delta: it is indeed the maritime access point of the Port of Antwerp.

The the Western Scheldt is the outlet of the Scheldt in the the North Sea. The water way is relatively polluted, and the sea life disappeared from certain parts. However, from the progressive construction of installations of purification of water, the contribution of biomaterials with decreased. The purification of the Scheldt is henceforth a political objective in the long run.

The natural obstacle with displacements which form the Western Scheldt between the Flanders zélandaise and the remainder of the Netherlands, is circumvented since March 2003 by the Tunnel of the Western Scheldt. Previously, it was necessary to make a road turning while passing by Antwerp and the Belgium, or to borrow the vat between Terneuzen (southern bank) and Flessingue (northern bank) whose tariffs were regularly disputed.

The Western Scheldt presents also difficulties for sea transport, because of a sinuous course, of its currents of tide and the sand banks which move regularly.

The Western Scheldt is a relatively recent water way. The historical outlet of the river was indeed the the Eastern Scheldt. In fact at the beginning of the Middle Ages a small arm of the sea was there. In addition, on the level of the Perkpolder, a small river called the " ran; Honte" , which ran towards the east to throw itself in the Scheldt. It is primarily at the 12th century, but can be already as of the 9th century, that the Scheldt gradually borrowed these valleys from the detriment of the Eastern Scheldt. The arm of the sea continues to extend to the liking from the floods and the storms.
