The Voyage of Mr Perrichon

the Voyage of Mr Perrichon is a comedy in four acts of Eugene Labiche and Edouard Martin, represented for the first time on September 10th, 1860 with the theater of the Gymnasium, in Paris.

Summary

Perrichon wish to marry their Henriette daughter with the one of the two men who wish it: they must choose.

Armand is one of the applicants of Henriette, it is helped in its conquest by Mrs Perrichon who is favorable for him, by Henriette itself because she likes it and by the circumstances (it saved the life of Mr Perrichon and rendered many services to him).

Daniel, his opponent, does not cease flattering the career of Mr Perrichon. This one " sauve" life of Daniel.

Majorin helps Armand indirectly because it makes become aware of its defects with Mr Perrichon.

The two applicants seek to flatter the father of Henriette to gain her confidence.

Comments

This part is remarkable in particular for the very fine characterization of the middle-class that Labiche practices there, creator of the most famous light comedies at the end of 19th. Mr Perrichon is the prototype of the honest middle-class man: trading nouveau riche, swollen vanity, of fashionable ambition and a morals somewhat subjected to the circumstances and whose Labiche said: " This animal (the middle-class man) offers resources without number with which can see them, it is inépuisable." The competition of two men who want both to marry the girl of M.Perrichon is the great intrigue of the part, one saves the life of Perrichon and the other is made save by Perrichon. It is the second who is the most appreciated…
