The Vistula
The the Vistula (in Polish: Wisła , in German: Weichsel ) is the main thing Fleuve Polish.
Geography
It takes its source in the Beskides Western into high Silesia to 1106 m of altitude and traverses 1047 km through Poland before throwing in the the Baltic close to Gdańsk. The average annual flow with the mouth is of 1054 m ³ /s
The course of the river includes/understands three sections:
- the higher course, from the source with Sandomierz or it receives the San, affluent of Right Bank;
- the middle price, of Sandomierz to the confluence with the Bug enlarged Narew, important affluents of Right Bank;
- the lower course, of the confluence with Bug with the mouth by a delta in bay of Gdańsk. The delta of the Vistula knew important modifications of its layout during historical times.
The catchment area of the Vistula extends on 194.424 km ² what represents more than 60% of all Poland and all its oriental party (the remainder of the country is mainly drained by the Oder (in Polish Odra ). The point highest of this basin is located in Tatras, to 2.663 m of altitude, and its average altitude is of 270 Mr. Cependant, 55% of surface is at altitudes ranging between 100 and 200 m and even, 75% between 100 m and 300 Mr. the basin are very dissymmetrical, its greater part extends to the east of the river.
Hydrology
The very flat aspect of the crossed countries explains why the Vistula is sometimes at the origin of catastrophic floods, for example in 1813,1888,1934,1960.
