Synopsis

Kitty Garstin, a beautiful rather frivolous young woman of the London high society of the years 1920, advanced about thirty and always single person, is in a hurry to marry by his/her mother who arranges, without her knowledge, a meeting with the bacteriologist Walter Fane. This one, conventional and measured with compasses, is already very in love with Kitty whereas she hardly noticed it. When he asks him to marry it, she temporizes until she discovers that the marriage was premeditated by its family. Without another alternative for finally escaping the influence from her mother, it accepts and couples it share for China where Walter is delegated by the British government to the department of the search for Shanghai. Kitty, désœuvrée, falls in love with a married man, the tempting diplomat Charlie Townsend, with whom it starts a connection. Walter is not long in discovering the adultery of his wife and, ulcerated, its intention means to him to require the divorce. Kitty remains disabled, because, at the time, the divorce with the profit of the husband was still defamatory for the woman. Walter then proposes to grant the divorce in his favor to him provided that it makes a sizeable marriage with Charlie which claims to want to divorce for it if not it will have to accompany it in its medical mission at the fine bottom by the south by China where a serious cholera epidemic prevails. In addition, the British are threatened soon by Chinese bunches following an unhappy confrontation. Via their only and devoted neighbor, Waddington, Kitty meets the Mother Superior of the French convent. In the number of the many victims of the epidemic, appear of the nuns. Kitty then starts to work for the convent.
