The Upsetters

The Upsetters is the name of the collective of musicians of Lee " Scratch" Perry of 1969 to 1979. This collective accompanied it in round in 1970, accompanied in studio the musicians that Lee Perry produces during this period, the group of his studio the Black Ark.

This collective was with " geometry variable" and its composition depended on the mood and the requirements of Lee Perry. Many large musicians jamaïcains belonged to this group and the members of the group in 1969 were not the same ones as in 1976. Upsetters are seldom credited because they generally play to accompany the singers (max Romeo sign nevertheless its album War Ina Babylon under the name of max Romeo and the Upsetters ).

History

The first formation was composed of Jackie Jackson to low, Hugh Malcolm with the battery, Hux Brown with the guitar and Winston Wright with the organ. It is them whom one hears on " People Funny Boy" where Lee Perry regulates his accounts with Joe Gibbs just like it regulated its accounts with Coxsone in the title " The Upsetter".

These musicians are Dynamites of Clancy Eccles or Crystalites of Derrick Harriott. They also played for Toots And The Maytals on many albums. Towards 69, they are replaced by the ex Hippy Boys, i.e. Aston Barrett with low, his/her Carlton brother with the battery, alva Lewis with the rhythmic guitar, Rannie Bop Williams with the guitar solo and Glen Adams with the organ. It is with them that Lee Scratch amongst other things will record the Wailers from 69 to 73.

Then, at the time of the Black Ark, the formation still will evolve/move. The low one is held by Robbie Shakespeare or Boris Gardiner (sometimes Dougie Bryan), the battery by Sly Dunbar, Lloyd Adams or Mickey Boo Richards; with the keyboards Theophilius Beckford, Winston Wright, Robbie Lyn or Keith Sterling; The guitars of Earl “Clouded” Smith, Michael Chung (aka Mao), Willie Lindo, Ernest Ranglin or Robert Johnson. It is advisable to associate to them many musicians like Augustus Pablo with the mélodica or with the keyboard, David Madden and Bobby Ellis with the trumpet, Vin Gordon with the trombone, Glen DaCosta with Tommy McCook and Dirty Harris with the saxes, and finally with struck Christmas " Skully" Simms (also known under the name of Zoot Simms), Uziah " Sticky" Thompson and Lee " Upsetter" Perry himself. Lee Perry produced with them only the album Super Ape in 1976.

After Skatalites, Upsetters are one of instrumental formations which by their great discographic presence had a very important influence on the musical evolution of Reggae of the Seventies, until the arrival of the sequencers and of limp at rates/rhythms.
