The University of California (Berkeley)

L' the University of California, Berkeley (still called UCB , Cal , Berkeley , or CPU Berkeley ) is the first campus of the the University of California. It is located at Berkeley, in California, on bank is Baie of San Francisco, giving on the Golden Spoils. On the campus work: 33000 students and more: 1800 teachers. It is about the only campus authorized to prevail itself indifferently of the names “University off California”, “Cal” or “Berkeley”.

In 2007, it is classified with the 3rd rank of the better universities in the world by the University of Shangai.

History

The grounds occupied now by the campus of Berkeley were bought in 1866 by the Private university of California ( Private College off California ), founded by Pasteur Henry Lasting in 1855. In hillock with problems of financing, the College of California the March 23rd 1868 with the École des Mines amalgamated and mechanical arts ( Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College ), public corporation, to form the the University of California. During was the first president. The university opened for the first time at Oakland in 1869. In 1873, buildings North and South being completed, the university moved on the campus of Berkeley. It then included/understood 167 students and 222 coeds.

In the middle of the 20th century, the campus of Berkeley lived its golden age, in Physique, Chimie and Biologie, so that it was called " Athens of the ouest". At that time the use of the Cyclotron, invented by Ernest Orlando Lawrence license with the physicists working on the campus to discover majority of the chemical elements heavier than the Uranium, occasion to garner many Nobel Prize S. Two of these elements, the Berkelium and the Californium were thus named in the honor of this university. Two others, it Lawrencium and the Seaborgium pays homage to two professors Ernest Orlando Lawrence and Glenn T. Seaborg.

The University became universally known almost a century after its foundation, at the time of the demonstrations coeds against the engagement of the United States to the Vietnam. This period of social agitation on the campus goes back to the Free Speech Movement, which began in Berkeley in 1964 and inspired the political and moral attitude of a whole generation. Joan Baez had then spoken to claim “the freedom of speech and the abolition of the censure”.

The Campus

The entire surface of the campus is of 499 hectares, although the campus the main thing including/understanding the buildings of the university hardly covers but 72 hectares. This campus with the shape of a rectangle, of which the length is directed of is in western. All the surface of the campus is built. Above the principal campus several research units are established, particularly the National laboratory Lawrence Berkeley. The essence of the high part of the campus covers broken hills and is not developed yet. The residences coeds and the administrative buildings overflow on the city, particularly in the south of the campus.
