The Unforgettable Fire
The Unforgettable Fire is the fourth album studio of the rock group U2 left on October 1st, 1984 in music on Island Records.
Left one year after War , which enclosed a trilogy produced by Steve Lillywhite, the disc is produced by Brian Eno, musician visionary, often quoted as inventive of the ambient music , like famous producer of David Bowie (in particular of the album Heroes ) or of the Talking Heads. Part of the album was recorded with the castle of Slane Castle, in an unused ballroom (the making-of of the recording is visible on the VHS " The Unforgettable Fire" , not republished in DVD but available in the no-claims bonus of the " U2 Go Home - Live From Slane Castle Ireland"). The castle which is visible on the small pocket of the albume is not however Slane Castle but Moydrum, of the county of Limerick.
Eno turned U2 towards a different sound, less “heroic”, tempos sometimes slowed down and long instrumental and improvised beaches. Titles such as " Pride" or " Wire" are however more conform to the former albums. According to clean the dires of the beater Larry Mullen Jnr, Eno and his/her faithful collaborator Daniel Lanois were the first with truly being interested in the rhythm section of the group (while Steve Lillywhite stressed the voice and the guitars). This first collaboration particulièrment was particulièrment appreciated on both sides, in spite of the initial reserves of the Island recording company (Eno itself had decided not to work again never again with an rock group). The experiment was thus renewed with many recoveries during the career of U2 (in particular three years later with the parrution of mythical the " The Joshua Tree").
The album contains Pride (in the name off coils) , piece written with the memory of Martin Luther King (just like MLK) which will become first number 1 of the charts in the United Kingdom for U2, and an anthem which no concert could put aside since. This disc introduces a new topic into the writing of Bono: its feeling of fascination-repulsion towards the United States. " The Unforgettable Fire" is thus regarded as the first album " américain" group. America is very present throughout the disc (" Pride" , " MLK" , " Elvis Presley And America" , " 4th Off July" , Indian Summer Sky").
