The USA Network

the USA Network is an American television channel by cable. The USA is a general channel which proposes televised series in first diffusion or repeat broadcast, films and sporting retransmissions. The USA Network was regarded a long time as a minor chain of the cable. For a few years, it has had could be distinguished while diffusing in the first exclusiveness in the televised series with success such as Monk , Dead Zone , the 4400 or Psych .

History of the USA Network

  • 1977 : Known at the origin under the name of Madison Square Garden Network , the chain is one of the first television channels to being diffused by satellite.
  • 1980: The chain is renamed the USA Network following the entry in its capital of a joint-venture between UA-Columbia Cablevision (known today under the name of Cablevision Systems Corporation) and MCA Inc.
  • 1981 : Time Inc. and Paramount Pictures enter the capital of the USA.
  • 1987: Paramount and MCA find each one with 50% of the actions of the chain.
  • 1992: The USA launches a chain specisalized in the science fiction and the fantastic one: Sci Fi Chanel.
  • 1994: Viacom repurchases Paramount.
  • 1995: Seagram repurchases MCA Inc.
  • 1997 : Following the repurchase of the shares of Viacom, Seagram finds owner with 100% of the USA and Sci Fi. The two chains are resold with the Home Shopping Network of Barry Diller. The Home Network Shopping is then renamed the USA Networks, Inc.
  • 1999: Following the bankruptcy of Polygram, the USA Networks repurchases October Films and Gramercy Pictures (which it renames the USA Films) and PolyGram Video (that it renames the USA Video Home).
  • 2000: The USA Networks repurchases Canadian North American Television, Inc. (a joint venture between CBC and Power Corporation) which has the chains Trio and Newsworld International.
  • 2001: The USA Networks resells all its television channels (except chains of armchair shopping) and production companies of cinema (the USA Network, Sci Fi Chanel, Trio, the USA Films - which is renamed Focus Features - and Studios the USA) with Vivendi Universal. The USA and the other television channels are integrated into the Universal Television Group.
  • 2003: NBC approaches the cinema activities and television - and thus Universal Television Group - of Vivendi Universal.
  • 2004: NBC Universal takes again the USA Network and the other chains of the group, except for Newsworld International which is taken again by a group of investment directed by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt.
