Mr Poe (banking charged with the money of the children) does not find any more tutors for the Baudelaire young people… But there is still a hope… A new formula is offered to certain cities or villages: " One needs a whole village to raise a enfant". The Orphans have the possibility of choosing a village. One of the list the intrigue, it bears the name of V.D.C mysterious letters (cf Piège with the college). The children go in this village which is not other than Villeneuve Of the Corbels. Over there, of the forced labors, of the laws without logic, and various poems written by Isadora Beauxdraps. (Poetesse-born, it has a passion for the Distiques) Hector, " the man with all faire" village proposes to lodge the Orphans at his place, for lack of volunteers. Violet finds a " house volante" (project of Hector which can help them to escape to find the Beauxdraps Orphans.) But, one day, a man named Jack Snicket known as to have information on the parents of the Orphans. Jack (which carries a tattooing on ankle left, the same one as the count Olaf) is stopped in the place of this last. The following day, Jack is killed in prison. The detective Duplin (alias Count Olaf) stops the children with invented evidence of all parts (a ribbon like that of Violet, one of the lenses of Klaus, the traces of teeth on the corpse). Once in prison, Hector gives to the Orphans one of the famous poems of Isadora revealing to them that they are locked up with the fountain. (Explanation: the first letter of each worms gives one of the letters of the word). But at the end, Beauxdraps succeed in escaping… without Beaudelaire This seventh volume marks a border between the first part of the life of the orphans and the second. In the first part of their life, they are seen entrusted to various distant parents while in the second part, they become criminals sought by the law.
