  • the reason of the choice of Welles as director is discussed: was it imposed by Charlton Heston or the producer Albert Zugsmith on the studios Universal which feared that the film is a financial drain? At the time of the first day of turning, Welles succeeds in the exploit to put out of box the 4 days equivalent of turning and reassures the financial ones of Universal which will leave him a great freedom. It then decides to be released from the monitoring of the studios and moves the team in outside with Venice (California) where it turns night. Turning proceeds without difficulty in record time, between on February 18th and on April 2nd 1957. However, Universal is not satisfied with the first assembly. The studio entrusts the new assembly to Ernst Nims and decides to make turn of the additional sequences by Harry Keller.
  • Orson Welles, dissatisfied with the modifications made to its assembly, sent to the studio a note of 58 pages including/understanding the changes which it planned to bring to the film which was to finally leave. It is on the basis of this note that in 1998, a new version was re-installed in order to restore the vision of the realizer.
