Summary of work

In his prolog, the author compares himself with Diogène. As a good epicurean, he appreciates the wine and the good expensive one. The drink is a pleasure which the writer could not hide. It acknowledges to be devoted to it before taking the feather. This book is addressed to people of good besides: “with the drinkers of the fermented premium”.

Pantagruel, after having conquered the country of Dipsodie, sends to it a little more than nine billion men, without counting the women and the children. Only the conquerors, eaters of people, succeed in keeping the annexed ground. The conqueror cannot reign that if it is right and makes apply laws, publishes edicts and establishes a religion. He is presented like a sovereign right and balanced. He gives soon the châtellenie of Samilgondin to Panurge which wastes the richnesses and speaks in praise of prodigality. By not moderating its pleasures, Panurge brightens its body and its spirit. This immoderation is good for health. Behind the praise of the debts a praise of the life hides.

Pantagruel rejects this philosophy which consists in borrowing without measurement. Panurge remains on its positions and predicts a short life: he will die of his farts. The Pantagruel giant delivers the new lord of the manor of his debts towards him, after him to have shown the limits of his speech. Educated, this last can take a new departure.

Panurge wants to marry. For the occasion, it carries a ridiculous getup: small ring of gold to the ear, long dress of bore-hole - pointing out the dress of the monks and glasses attached to his bonnet. It withdrew its fly, which it estimates to be an attribute of the warrior.

He asks council Pantagruel before taking woman. He is afraid of the inaccuracies of his wife, but wishes to have heirs and to appease his sexual desires.

Pantagruel answers him that only its will dictate the best way to him to be followed.

Panurge decides to go to consult the fates.

Several consultations follow: the first with Pantagruel via the fates virgiliens. The meeting is closed on the following reading, made by the Giant: Panurge will be cuckold, struck and stolen. Ruffled by this first interpretation, Panurge decides to question oracles of the sleep. Each time, Pantagruel and its friends conclude the same thing.

Panurge successively will consult a sibyl, Nazdecabre - deaf person and dumb man of birth, Raminagrobis - old man poet, Her Trippa - astrologer, palmist, géomantien-, Hyppothadée - theologist, Rondibilis - doctor, Trouillogan - philosopher and finally Triboulet - insane. Each time, the fates repeats the same thing and Panurge refuses to hear, it is plugged by its own desires. He would like to take a “perfect” wife, seeking to reassure itself by the fates which finally insécurisent it. Its decision rests in itself, but he does not manage to choose.

In parallel, Bridoye judge relies on the fates when the cases become too difficult.

Pantagruel requires of his/her Gargantua father to leave the places. Gargantua Formula One a wish before his departure. He would like that his/her son finds a wife. Concerned of suitabilities and the patriarchal authority, Pantagruel accepts. His/her father will find joint to him during his absence.

A little later the Giant goes to the port of Thalasse and makes charge his magic grass: Pantagruélion. This grass has several characteristics of hemp, but it exceeds them. Enemy of the robbers, it is used to block the mouth of some of them. It is used as cord to hang the faulty men. Not being consumed in contact with fire, it allows the flames as with ashes not being propagated. This grass has an immense power which frightens the Gods, this is why they decided to resist to him.

The text is closed on the praise of the kingdom of France of which Pantagruélion comes.
