The Supreme

The Supremes is a group of popular music American, credit of 1959 with 1977.

The group is formed under the first name of The Primettes , in 1959, with an aim of accompanying the members by the group The Primes' in concert. Composed of Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diane Ross, which is then 15 years old each one, and of Betty Travis, one year their elder. Betty McGlown (future Betty Travis), then Florence Ballard will very early leave Primettes under the pressure of their parents who considered their studies more important. Diane Ross and Mary Wilson will occur then in duet while waiting for that their comrades are diplômées.
Initially, Florence Ballard will be the lead voice group, have regard to her powerful voice gospel.

Holland-Dozier-Holland

In 1961, the young girls sign with Berry Gordy, of Motown, which forces to them to change name. They become, The Supremes . At the same time, Diane Ross is made call Diana. The first three discs of Supreme have catastrophic sales, Diana Ross takes a place of waitress in a cafeteria of Détroit and Barbara Martin leaves the formation to marry. In 1964, the Supreme ones are organized differently, Berry Gordy decides to put Diana Ross on the front of the scene. They sing Where did our coils go , a song of Holland, Dozier & Holland which the Marvelettes had refused. It will be a number one and in a few weeks, the Supreme ones reach glory. Successes are connected then: Baby Coils will be also number one in 1964, in the United States and the United Kingdom (it is the first time besides that a female formation is number one in the United Kingdom). Diana Ross and the Supreme

Florence Ballard and Diana Ross get along less and less. Diana Ross also starts to record her parts without the group whose cohesion is exhausted. Last years

In 1972, Cindy Birdsong leaves the group to found a hearth. She is replaced by Lynda Lawrence. Begin a succession of replacements then: Sherrie Payne, Cindy Birdsong again and Susaye Greene. In December 1976, it is with the turn of Mary Wilson to leave the group, it is replaced by Karen Jackson. The last title recorded by the Supreme ones, You' Re Driving My Wheel (1976) will pass about unperceived.
