Synopsis
The spectacle starts by the Fronde of the people against the Cardinal Mazarin. A revolt subdued in the sang. The Louis young person is crowned king with Rheims, but the capacity is confiscated to him by his/her mother, Anne of Austria and by Mazarin, which wonder about the real capacities of the young monarch to reign. Louis learns the love near Marie Mancini, one emigrated Italian without birth, niece of Mazarin.
To affirm itself, the young monarch decides to order his armies at the time of a campaign, against the will of his mother and in spite of the concern of Marie Mancini. Reached of a serious disease, one believes it soon dead, the court already forgets it and turns to his brother, Philippe, said “Mister”, who succeeds Louis Dieudonné in the order of accession to the throne. But the miracle operates, a doctor of Anne of Austria tries a remedy and Louis returns to the life. He learns that everyone forgot it, except for his family and from Marie. Passionately in love with the beautiful Italian, it projects to marry it, but Marie itself thinks that is not possible. Anne of Austria, Mazarin and the Pope himself are strongly opposed to it. Louis is obstinated but the reason ends up carrying it. Marie is forced with the exile and the young King marries the infante of Spain, Marie-Therese. The first act is completed by the pain of the separation of Marie of Louis, who thus sacrificed his destiny of man to that of king.
The second act opens on the death of Mazarin. Louis can then seize the power without division, it draws aside his own mother, and becomes the Sun king. Its emotional life is more chaotic: it is lost in the arms of many mistresses among whom sulfurous the Mrs. de Montespan. He lives in ostentation without worrying about the weight which weighs on the shoulders of the French people, which finance his wars and the construction of his disproportionate dream, the Château of Versailles.
After episodes animated like the business of the mask of Iron and that of the poisons, Louis will carry out what he could not make a success of with Marie Mancini. It Marie in secrecy with Francoise d' Aubigné, a woman without birth, former wife of the poet Scarron and controlling illegitimate children whom he had with Mrs. de Montespan.

Treatment of the history in “the Sun king”
Loves
This spectacle is a musical comedy general public of which the goal is to tell in a positive way the love life of the favorite king of French. That constituted a challenge so much the emotional life of a king such as Louis XIV is factitious: pulled about between the reason of State, its own inconstancy and the way in which nobody - neither women of the court nor their husbands - could resist the wills of an absolute monarch, the life of Louis XIV leaves little place to the seduction and the intrigues in love. It bought the women who it wished, and made fall in disgrace those which it did not wish plus.Three of its most famous loves were retained: Marie Mancini, Mrs. de Montespan and Mrs. de Maintenon.
- Louise of Vallière, which however gave two children to the king and that the historians often present like the most sincere love of the king, is forgotten.
- the infante Marie-Therese, wife legitimate of the king, is hardly evoked.
Historical interpretation
- the Fronde is presented of entry like a popular movement, a Révolution before the hour. However the Sling is initially a war of being able in the more high summit of the state (Gaston de France, Condé, against Mazarin and Anne of Austria), relayed by the Parlement of Paris and by the commercial corporations of Paris, revolted against the increase in the taxes. The interpretation of the facts is passably anachronistic here and strongly points out the revolution of 1830 such as it is treated in the Poor wretches of Victor Hugo. The duke of Beaufort is there even depicts like a romantic revolutionist, associated with a girl of the people, Isabelle.
- the reign of Louis XIV is presented like an episode of the history stripped of relief: the positive aspects of its assessment (favor of arts and sciences, large building sites, modernization of the country) like its negative episodes (ruin of the country by the warlike campaigns of the king, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, institutionalization of the slave system) are completely put aside to the profit of a rather quiet life of court. The weakening of the nobility, the centralization of France and the absolutism of its king, which are the major facts of the reign of Louis XIV, are hardly evoked. The increasing importance of the religion, under the influence in particular of Mrs. de Maintenon, is not mentioned. One cannot qualify these omissions of inaccuracies or historical errors, but they do not give a quite complete idea of the importance of the reign of Louis XIV in the French history.
- Mister, the brother of the king, is presented in a rather traditional way like the inconsistent and whimsical fêtard that his/her mother had made of him to draw aside it from the throne. Its financial capacity (equal to that of the king), its talent of soldier or its very particular influence on the court is not evoked.
Facts
- the Food poisoning which failed to cost the life to the king at the time of the catch of Bergues is transformed into wound of war (it is not known as, but heavily under-wide).
- the Duke of Beaufort, brother bastard of the king, becomes the Homme with the iron mask, assumption already appeared in literature under the feather of Lagrande-Chancel but not having never been evoked by historians, would be this only for its anachronisms, the life of the duke of Beaufort for the period of imprisonment of the man to the iron mask being perfectly known.
- the ageing of the king (who is a man of ripe age when he marries Mrs. de Maintenon) is not shown.
- the male characters of the part do not carry the moustache characteristic of the time.
Around the spectacle
After some more or less important failures ( young ladies of Rochefort , Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful ), the musical comedy in France awaited a true success, and all was done so that it is the Sun king which obtains it. The team is partly that of the Ten Commands (a very great success, already), the spectacle was prepared during two years, with a budget of six and support euro million of many media, in particular NRJ and TF1. The spectacle occupies more than one hundred fifty confirmed professionals (including fifty five only on scene). The decorations, and especially the costumes, are extremely soignés.Prepared by an important media presence of its songs, the spectacle is immediately a success and was represented 380 times in front of a total of a million and six hundred and thousand spectators approximately. The album itself was sold with nearly a million specimens and the individual ones which were extracted from it are rather well distributed: To be with the height (150 000 e.g.), I Make of you my Essence (300 000 e.g.), As long as one still dreams”/a gesture of You (150 000 e.g.), the life passes (100 000 e.g.).
