The Stone Roses was a group rock'n'roll English formed in 1984 with Manchester. In spite of a career disturbed by different with their first label and a discography summarizing itself with two albums studio, they remain one of the British groups most influential of the Années 1980 and 1990.
Biography
Beginnings
Originating in the district of Timperley, in the southern suburbs of Manchester, the guitarist John Squire and his friend of childhood Ian Brown (then bass player) form The Patrol at the beginning of the Années 1980, in company of Andy Couzens (song and guitar) and Simon Wolstencroft (battery). When in 1984 a promoter in concerts of Stockholm proposes to them to occur abroad they rename The Stone Roses. Ian Brown inherits the microphone and the group recruits a new bass player, Pete Garner.Alan Wren, known as Reni, replaces Wolstencroft (future beater of The Fall) before the recording of their first individual, So Young , produced by Martin Hannett. The disc is published in 1985 by the small label Thin Line, The Stone Roses then records a complete album with the producer mancunien, but defers his exit. He will be born later only ten years and without the agreement of the group, under the title Garage Flower . Andy Couzens leaves Stone Roses in 1986, it will form The High thereafter. Starting from 1987 they move away from their influences Punk, their second individual, Sally Cinnamon , realized by the label FM Revolver, is the first example of this evolution of style. The group is taken in hand by the manager Gareth Evans, owner of the night club Manchester International, competitor of The Hacienda, the nightclub of the label Factory. The formation evolves/moves again with the departure of Pete Garner, then the arrival of the bass player Gary Mounfield, known as Mani. In 1988 the quartet engages with Silvertone Records, Elephant Stone , their new individual, is produced by Peter Hook of New Order. The quartet furrows for the first time the country in November. They forge an attitude mixing mortuary and relaxation, gradually works out a look (cuts with the bowl and pants baggy) and an visual identity. Reasons inspired for the dripping of the American painter Jackson Pollock appear on the small pockets of their discs and decorate the guitars of John Squire.
A brêve apogee
Individual the Made Of Stone is indicated individual week by the weekly magazine New Musical Express train with the beginning of the year 1989. In March Silvertone Records publishes their first album which bears their name, produced by John Leckie, which obtains the 19th place in the British charts. With Mondays and 808 State Stone Roses become the symbol of the new scene of Manchester. The phenomenon, meets independent rock'n'roll and rates/rhythms dance popularized by the explosion of the Acid house during the summer 1989, remains mainly confined with the the United Kingdom.
In front of the success of the album, the first individual ones are republished during the year 1990. The individual new One Love is classified in Signal 5, at the top of their popularity Stone Roses attract nearly 30.000 spectators at the time of the giant concert given on May 27th in the industrial park of, a first for an independent group.
The Stone Roses cancel their American round, planned for the summer 1990, the dynamics of the group is broken by a disagreement with the label Silvertone Records, which obliges them to keep silence during five years. To answer at the request of the public the label must be satisfied successively to leave three new extracts the album, I Wanna Be Adored , Waterfall and I Am The Resurrection . A compilation of faces-B is born then in 1992, the absence of new songs does not prevent Turns Into Stone from reaching the 32e British charts.
Released from its contract with Silvertone, the formation signs then at Geffen, which in December 1994 publishes finally their second album, heading Second Coming . After several years of waiting the disc disappoints the critic and the public British, who are about to succumb to a new generation of groups and the movement Britpop. Nevertheless the individual extracts of the album, Coils Spreads and Ten Storey Love Song , respectively reaches the second and the eleventh place of the British charts; whereas Second Coming is classified in Signal 5 in the United Kingdom and the 47e place in the United States. Surfant on the wave, the Silvertone label publishes the following year The Complete Stone Roses , a new compilation the individual ones, which rises in the 4th place of the sales, then Garage Flower made up of old new recordings going back to 1985 and rejected by the group.
Dissolution
The Reni beater leaves The Stone Roses before the group sets out again on the roads, it is replaced by Robbie Maddix. The new formation cancels a British round planned for spring 1995, The Stone Roses appear in the program of the festival of Glastonbury, but their service is finally cancelled when the guitarist John Squire breaks the Clavicule at the time one day of rest during the American round. All these incidents and carryforwards cause the incomprehension of the public, the more so as the group privileges Europe, the United States and Japan whereas they have occurred more in the United Kingdom for five years. The round of the return takes place finally at the end of 1995, and is carried out with closed counters, all the tickets having been sold in one day. It finishes with the Wembley Stadium on December 29th.The end of the group is precipitated by the departure of the guitarist and type-setter John Squire, announced in March 1996. It is replaced by the musician of studio Aziz Ibrahim, Stone Roses also engage the clavierist Nigel Ippinson, but the departure of two of the founding members will be right of the group in a few months. John Squire will found The Seahorses thereafter. The singer Ian Brown launches out in a career solo whereas the bass player Gary Mounfield joined Primal Scream.
Ian Brown draws readily from the repertory of its old group when it occurs on scene, maintaining the hope the fans. A durable influence
Still today the critics and the British public regard the album The Stone Roses as one of the most outstanding discs rock'n'roll of the history. In a survey carried out in 1993 near the readers of NME the disc was classified fifth, ten years later it is elected better album of all times in front of Doolittle of the Pixies and the album Fart Sounds of the Beach Boys. In 2006 a new vote indicates it better British album in front of The Queen Is Dead of the Smiths and Definitely Maybe , the first album of Oasis. In 2004 the survey of To observe near a panel of journalists and musicians elects to him also The Stone Roses .The Silvertone label benefits from their popularity to market an special edition of the album The Stone Roses , enriched by video extracts, ten years after its initial exit. In 2002 the label entrusts to has Guy Called Gerald, 808 State or Paul Oakenfold the care of Remix er twelve pieces of the group, the new versions are published on The Remixes , which will be followed of a new compilation entitled The Very Best Of The Stone Roses , classified in Signal 20 at the time of its exit. Finally a DVD gathering a concert given to Blackpool, video clips and televised appearances is published in 2004.
