According to Christo: “ It is a kind of luminous way. When the sun is shining behind the fabrics, they are of a gilded young person. The parts in the shade become almost red. ”
This project had been presented to the municipal officials of the city, for the first time in 1979, but it had started the lightnings of the “Central Park Conservancy”, the council charged to manage celebrates it New Yorkean park. The growing notoriety of the artists - five million people made displacement to come to see the packed Reichstag -, the serious one of their organization, but especially, the election of Michael Bloomberg, as mayor of “Apple”, personal friend of Christo and enthusiastic admiror of their work, allowed its realization finally.
The project required 380 trucks for only transporting, the 1 {{er}} December 2004, the steel bases being used as support with the gantries, since the factory of Queens, and which were transposed on deads end. The artistic adventures of Christo, although gigantic thus expensive, in general are entirely financed by the sale of the preparatory studies. An exposure on the preparatory drawings of “ The Spoil ”, organized April in July 2004 with the Metropolitan Museum off Art of New York attracted the collectors and the public.
The cost of this particular project would have bordered the 21 million US$, but the artists did not give more details. On their side, Greg Allen and the NewYork Times, while trying to detail the expenditure, with reasonable evaluations for the material, the work preparatory and the direct costs relating to the installation, arrived at an amount estimated between 5 and 10 million US$.
In addition, an agreement with the house Hermes, made it possible to publish a silk square sold exclusively in the shop of Madison Avenue New York for the price of 320 US$. This square Hermes is orange saffron, the color of the fabric tended through the 7.500 gantries. Moreover, for the first time also, the artists agreed to join their name with a line of products derived (bags, watches, posters…) sold in the museums. The amount of the sales should be transferred with association with nonlucrative goal Nurture New York' S Nature which works in the defense of the New Yorkean environment.
Inspiration
“ The Gates ” strongly refers to the Japanese tradition of the doors Torii, traditionally built at the entry of the tombs Shinto. Thousands of torii of color vermilion accompany the ways by the tomb of Fushimi Inari with Kyōto. The Japanese business men who succeeded, traditionally buy and make build a door to express their gratitude with Inari, the god of the fertility, rice and foxes.
