The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins are a group of alternative Rock American, originating in Chicago. The group is articulated around the singer and guitarist Billy Corgan, who is the only member to have taken part in all the albums of the group.

Historically composed of Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and D' Arcy Wretzky, the group separates into 2000 before being reformed in 2006. James Iha and D' Arcy Wretzky is then replaced by Jeff Schroeder and Ginger Reyes for the services live.

History of the group

Beginnings

The group is formed in 1987 with Chicago (Illinois) by the association of Billy Corgan, James Iha and D' Arcy Wretzky. Initially, the group plays with a box at rates/rhythms and evolves/moves in a register new wave, until the recruitment of Jimmy Chamberlin. The name of the group was found by Billy Corgan, which at the time of a dream would have heard this sentence: “ Joe Strummer has drank and smashing pumpkins ”.

The group leaves in 1991 its first album, Gish (in reference to the actress of silent film Lillian Gish), which is completely eclipsed by the album Nevermind of Nirvana.

It is their second opus left in 1993, Siamese Dream , which places them among the great groups of Rock of the Années 1990. The album affirms already the power and the delicacy of the music and the texts of Billy Corgan which characterize the whole of the work of the group. This album is generally regarded as their masterpiece. As for " Gish" , it is recorded under the crook of Butch Vig, which multiplies the stylistic effects, like the Overdub. That is particularly remarkable for the song " Soma". Siamese Dream is followed of Pisces Iscariot in 1994, an album with more confidential diffusion, composed of faces B.

The growing popularity of the group comes partly from its leader Billy Corgan, described like a perfect megalomaniac and leaving little place to the other members of the group: it is said that all the tracks of guitar and basic of Siamese Dream were recorded by Corgan, relegating James Iha and D' Arcy Wretsky to the row of spectators. It would seem that the group functions correctly only under one permanent pressure.

Dedication

The dedication comes with Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness in 1995, which following the example White Album of the Beatles or The Wall of the Pink Floyd, will become one of the double-albums most sold with the world in the history of the rock'n'roll. 5 individual of it will result: Bullet With Butterfly Wings , Tonight, Tonight , Zero , Thirty-Three and 1979 . These 5 maxis are gathered in a box which leaves in 1996 pennies the name The Airplane Flies High , of a quality surprising for a collection of B-sides.

However, during the round of 1996, the clavierist Jonathan Melvoin dies of a heroin overdose. Jimmy Chamberlin, escapes to him from little with death, but its implication in this business will be worth to him to be excluded from the group by Billy Corgan. Generally, the hard drugs belonged to the daily newspaper of the group, and Billy Corgan had enough of it.

The departure of Jimmy Chamberlin marks a turning in the musical style of the group which leaves Adore in 1998, where the songwriting is directed towards more electronic and experimental sounds. Although the album preserves the same quality of writing that the others opus, it is a semi-failure on the commercial plan.

In 2000, after the return of Jimmy Chamberlin behind the barrels, D' Arcy leaves the group in full recording of Machina. It is replaced on scene by Melissa Auf Der Maur, a knowledge of Billy Corgan, which it had presented in 1995 to his friend Courtney Love, to replace in Hole, the bass player Kristen Pfaff, died in 1994.

One time end

Machina/The Machines off God leaves in 2000 after rehabilitation Jimmy Chamberlin in the group. Smashing Pumpkins return to a sound more Rock, and Billy Corgan carries out with this album its desire of “concept album”. In front of the refusal of Virgin to market the following album, Machina II/The Friends & Enemies off Modern Music are distributed in 25 specimens in the entourage of Billy Corgan with the instruction to divide work on Internet with the format MP3.

Smashing Pumpkins separate on December 2nd 2000 after a last concert with the Subway with Chicago, the same room where they had started their career 13 years before.

Billy Corgan starts to write the history of Smashing Pumpkins as of this day, in particular by the means of sound blog.

With Jimmy Chamberlin, it founds the group Zwan which will record a single album in 2003, which will receive a polished reception. In 2005 Billy Corgan records an album solo.

Reformation

In 2005, Billy Corgan publishes a page in Chicago Tribune to announce its intention to reform Smashing Pumpkins.

April 21st, 2006, the official site of the group announces that Smashing Pumpkins are officially reformed and that they will carry out the recording of a new album as of this summer ( It is official, Smashing Pumpkins are currently writing songs for their future album, the first since 2000. No coming out date was fixed until now, but the group envisages to record this summer ). It is not certain that James Iha is of this reformation, Of arcy Wretzky even less.

At the beginning of the month of August 2006, the official site is updated and announces to us that Smashing Pumpkins have been from now on in studio in order to prepare their first album for 7 years. Moreover, we learn there that the producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, The Cars, The Darkness) deals with this new opus. On October 18th, 20th and 26th, Jimmy Chamberlin, posted on the Myspace site of the group, three messages initial what seems to seem a " newspaper of bord" recording studio of the new album. It announces there in particular that collaboration with the producer Roy Thomas Baker was " not only one honor, but best the musical experiment ever lived by groupe". Smashing Pumpkins seem from now on to work with the producer Terry Date.

December 17th, 2006, Smashing Pumpkins envisage to remake their return to the stage in some European festivals this summer.

February 8th, 2007, on their site, Smashing Pumpkins announce the coming out date of their sixth album (official): ZEITGEIST , envisaged for on July 7th, 2007 (note: the date can note 07-07-07 ).

April 8th, 2007 suspense is raised, James Iha does not form part of the plans of reformation of Smashing Pumpkins. The interested party declared that he had not spoken in Billy Corgan since years, that he worked out in this moment a new album solo, as well as an independent label.

May 16th, 2007, the small pocket of ZEITGEIST is revealed on their site. One learns at the same time as the coming out date is shifted at July 10th.

The new formation is officially revealed in the first world on May 22nd, 2007 in Large Rex in Paris: Ginger Reyes (low), Jeff Schroeder (guitar) and LISA Harriton (keyboard) belongs to new the line-up; Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin keep their respective roles. The concert lasts nearly 3 a.m. and the set list is rich of old titles rearranged as well as new pieces undoubtedly intended to appear on ZEITGEIST .
