the Small Mosque in the meadow ( Little Mosque one the Meadow ) is a Televised series Canadian created by Zarqa Nawaz and diffused since the January 9th 2007 on CBC. In France, the series is diffused since the July 14th 2007 on Canal+.

Synopsis

This sitcom tells the daily life of the small Muslim community installed with Mercy and its relationship with the other inhabitants.

Characters

Amaar Rashid : The hero, is a young lawyer of Pakistani origin which decides to leave the bar to become the Imam of the town of Mercy. As of the first episode, Amaar is made stop with the airport to have pronounced the word “paradise” on the telephone…

Yasir Hamoudi : Canadian of Lebanese origin is without question the economic leader of the community. He is married in Sarah, Canadian converted with the Islam, which seems to be a bridge between the two communities. Together, they have a 25 year old named girl Rayyan who puts a point of honor to wear the veil.

Babber Siddiqui : it is the spiritual leader of the community. Bearded and equipped with a djellaba, it is most preserving of the Moslems of this small town.

Fred Tupper : chronicler with the local radio who spends her time making emerge the suspicions in connection with the Moslems of the city. It secretly grips of it for Fatima, practicing Moslem woman of origin native of Niger, always equipped with a traditional behavior.

Ass Popowicz : the mayor of the small town of Mercy. Pragmatic and perfectly conscious of its role, it helps the Muslim community only as from the moment when it makes sure that they will vote for it…

Reverend Duncan McGee : it for its part accepts very well the Moslems of the city, following without delay the message of love and tolerance of Jesus; what is worth besides many remonstrances of its religious hierarchy to him.

The title, the Small Mosque in the meadow , is a wink with the American series the Small house in the meadow .

Zarqa Nawaz, its director, explains why it took as a starting point her own experience. After having lived with Toronto, the anglophone big city of the East of the country, this British Moslem woman then settled in Regina, the capital of the Saskatchewan. Some of the situations scenarized in the sitcom thus have often a real base: the incomprehension between Moslems (which accounts for 2% of the Canadian population) and not-Moslems. “Through the comedy, I hope that a small light will light the lantern of those which have prejudices, in particular in the world post September 11th”, Zarqa Nawaz underlines. “But the series is well a sitcom, not a political satire. ” she prevents.
