The Small Gironde
Daily newspaper of the Western Southern area, the Small Gironde was founded in 1872. Of moderate “republican” tendency--“liberal” one would say today--it belonged to the Gounouilhou family which lived close to Arcachon (Moulleau) in her villa Ker Maden or to the castle Climens (High Barsac). The newspaper drew on average with 170.000 specimens, sometimes with some 300.000 specimens. The printing works of the newspaper was installed in Bordeaux in the hotel of Cheverus built in 1739, for the marquis of Tresne, by the Portier architect. It had been bought in 1859 by the printer Gustave Gounouilhou which there installs its workshops and publishes the daily newspaper the Gironde then, in 1872, the Small Gironde . In 1879, the workshops are equipped with rotary printing-presses. Gounouilhou combined with Gustave Bourrageas will constitute an important press group. They will be also shareholders of the cinematographic firm Pathé.
