The Small Band
the Small Band is a Flemish Orchestre of Baroque music
History
It was created in 1972 by Sigiswald Kuijken at the request of the German recording company Harmonia Mundi , to record, under the direction of Gustav Leonhardt, the music of the Bourgeois gentleman written by Lully. The name and the manpower of the unit are inspired by those of the Orchestre whose this type-setter at the court of Louis XIV laid out.The principle of this unit is to play the partitions such as they were interpreted at the time of their creation and on original instruments (or reproductions of originals). The recording had a very great success as of its exit, which propelled the unit on the music scene and led it to become a permanent orchestra.
Since, its repertory increases with the traditional style baroque Italian and . The direction of the unit is shared between Gustav Leonhardt and Sigiswald Kuijken, this last being the permanent director. In 1993, the recording in concert of Cosi fan tutte of Mozart receives an eulogistic criticism, like those of Don Giovanni in 1996 and of the Marriages of Figaro in 1999.
Since 1997, the Small Band is in residence with Leuwen. The orchestra profits from the support structural of the Flemish Communauté of Belgium and of the Province of the Flemish Brabant.
