The Silence of the sea
the Silence of the sea is a news of Jean Bruller, written under the pseudonym of Vercors and clandestinely published in the Éditions of Midnight as of February 1942. The news is in particular inspired by the reflections of the author following his reading of Jardins and roads of Ernst Jünger.
The news
In 1941, at the beginning of the Occupation, a German officer, enthusiast of French culture, “is lodged” (placed of force) at a family including/understanding an old man and his niece. By monologs preaching the bringing together of the people and fraternity, it tries, without success, to break the dumbness of its hosts whose patriotism can be expressed only by this passive silence. When the officer realizes that the bringing together of the people, claimed by the Propagande Nazi of the time, is only one deception, it decides by spite to engage on the face of the East. The Silence of the sea and other accounts is also the title of a collection of news of Jean Bruller.
The film of Jean-Pierre Melville
The history was adapted in a film of Jean-Pierre Melville in 1947.
