Jack Crawford hopes that Clarice will be able to withdraw capital information from them on Buffalo Bill.
Hannibal initially directs it towards a warehouse where she discovers the head of Benjamin Raspail, first victim of Buffalo Bill (apart from the murderers of its sister). Hannibal knows the identity of Buffalo Bill which had been presented to him by Benjamin Raspail, who was one of his patients. It commercial of the indices with Clarice provided that she agrees to lend herself to meetings of analysis. Although one has it warning statement nothing to reveal of personnel with Hannibal, Clarice lends itself to these delicate meetings in exchange of the set of tracks communicated by Lecter…

Comment
Sixteen years after its exit, work kept all the power of its effects or rather of its distressing atmosphere which grows louder and louder. Jonathan Demme took the party to follow very close the novel of Thomas Harris and nothing to add there if not its talent of scenario writer. Thus not of history of love stuck likely to distract us from this diving in the abyssals zone of the human heart concealing as many traumas that terrors and others monstruosités.Demme concentrates on face to face Starling/Lecter, stone angular of film. As in the tales of our childhood, Clarice will have to face monsters. They are not any more these phantasmagoric ogres of children's literature but of the beings of flesh and blood much more terrifying like are also the nightmares of its childhood always quite alive. As Tom Thumb which found again its way while following its small stones, Clarice will follow the indices of “the Hannibal ogre” at the same time as he “will evaluate” if it is worthy of the psychoanalysis that he “offers to him”, this gift which can as well appear poisoned like apple of the witch or beneficial like the pumpkin of the fairy according to the spirituality (or of dignity) of heroin. Always as in the tales, Clarice will have to pass from the tests which will decide on its fate… To know if it will be devoured or if it will become princess… With final, one understands that it gained the regard of the ogre because it made a success of the tests that he imposed to him and that he “literally feels” (and he touches it finger through the bars) which she now became strong enough for (finally) facing this other monster which has as a nickname Buffalo Bill…
The care which was taken to the voluntarily under-exposed photograph, like that demanding with éradiquer costumes or ornaments being likely to brighten us one moment, are remarkable (Clarice-Foster is constantly equipped color verdigris and one obscured his hair so that it is not too luminous). Very at summer conceived by Demme to go down always more deeply in a world where the trouble as with “View-point” in the Ohio oozes… It is the morose lull heralding, like the east silence before the storm, of the final test. Clarice goes, with the clean direction as with illustrated, to be inserted in the subsoils of a cellar symbolizing this human heart hiding in its corners and recesses as many horrors and fear which our brain has of neurons…
Clarice becomes itself a little monstrous, as if she inherited the gifts of Hannibal. When he escapes from his prison, it “already knows”, and it entrusts it to her Ardelia friend, that it does not have anything to fear of him… At the time of the very last sequences, it keeps for it-only its phone interview with Hannibal while looking at moving away Crawford, its superior, who disappointed it on several occasions and it knows that it owes its promotion more in Hannibal that with its owner, his regard can thus go only to only one person…
The two actors, precisely rewarded, hold from beginning to end film on their shoulders… That they had, each one with their way, the prescience of what it was necessary to do belongs to mysterious the sixth direction of the actor. It is known how much Jodie Foster fought for the role and that it is it which convinced Demme to add this sequence of drive to the beginning of film, as if Clarice either “were continued”, or the “prosecuting one” of something… Already, the beginning of the tale… One will remember a long time Anthony Hopkins, all rolled up chops, and of his “ssssllluppps” of ogre intended to test Clarice on other side of the wall of plexiglass and their reflections juxtaposed on the invisible walls of inexpressible…
