The Shadow

The Shadow is a character of fiction created by Walter B. Gibson. It is most famous of the heroes of pulps of the years 1930 and 1940. Made even more famous for series diffused with the radio, The Shadow also made its appearance in the Comics, the Comic strip S, the Télévision and seven Film S. However, The Shadow remains especially known for its broadcast emission.

History

Shadow was in the beginning a pseudonym used by a radio operator advertiser for the emission " Detective Story Hour" , a radiophonic adaptation of stories drawn from the pulps éponyme.

The character met such a success that " Street and Smith" the editor of " Detective Story Hour" created the Shadow Magazine .

It was the journalist and magician Walter B. Gibson who was charged to write the first news of Shadow. Under the pseudonym Maxwell Grant, will write 282 of the 325 news. Then it was Lester Tooth, creator of Doc. Savage, which continued to write certain stories.

The radiophonic adventures of Shadow stopped in 1954.

Comic Books

The Shadow was the subject of many adaptations in comics:
  • a comic strip by Vernon Greene in 1938.
  • Street & Smith published a magazine of comics in which a Shadow Comic appeared which lasted 101 numbers between 1940 and 1948.

  • archie Comics published also comics of Shadow, under the label Mighty Comics. At the beginning, Shadow was more or less inspired by the radio broadcast, but Jerry Siegel gave him an aspect more kitsch starting from number 3.
