The Second Sex

the Second Sex is a book written in 1949 by Simone de Beauvoir, old then 41 years. It is one of the works most famous and most important for the feminist movement. Nowadays, it is often employed like reference in the feminist speech . In fact, it is it which is at the origin of the nickname of “spiritual mother” of the second vague feminist allotted to Simone de Beauvoir.

This work not only famous but also is very discussed and that since its publication. the Second Sex relates to the various reasons of the inferiorisation of the woman in the company and almost all the fields out of the house. This work affirms that they are the men who manage the world and which the woman with temptation to devote itself entirely to its Mariage and his/her children, with the risk to limit his freedom. This situation comes simply owing to the fact that it does not feel able or although it does not wish to remain unmarried for economic reasons and/or social. The company, the parents, the religion, all reaffirms with the women that they are lower than the males and that they must have a husband. The development of the girls compared to the boys and in the world which surrounds them shows them with them and the company which the woman does not have the same capacities as the man. Beauvoir speaks about all the circumstances which lead people to accept the inferiority of the women and the effects that has on the choice of the women to marry and to give up their own career.

Moreover, work speaks about the trap which for them the marriage and the children represent. The marriage and the children are responsibilities much heavier for them than for the men and it is partly because of their role at the house that they are not carried out like individuals out of the house. Most of the time the woman sacrifices her career for that of her husband. Simone de Beauvoir speaks about the total situation of the women and realizes that the man and the woman are all the two persons in charge of this situation. The woman should not give up her career for her husband and his children and the man should not encourage it to do it. Moreover, Simone de Beauvoir explains why, in a world where the two sexes would be equal, both would be freer. She explains why if the man gives the possibility to the women of having a significant career, she less will focus herself on him and she could be a little more independent.

There is in the Second Sex many other relevant arguments which show the inequality of the sexes because of the division of the tasks at the house and the weak participation of the women in several other fields like work or the policy. It is seen, for example, that the highest stations for the majority are reserved to the men. There is thus always an inequality which exists and it is necessary to try to include/understand it for thus knowing how to correct the situation in the future. the Second Sex is a work which speaks about the problems of the woman and still continues to be a relevant and useful analysis of this topic.

In connection with the critical reception of the work, to refer to the Second sex of Simone de Beauvoir , texts joined together and presented by Ingrid Galster (Presses of the Paris-Sorbonne University, 2004) where are presented, inter alia, contradictory articles of Armand Hoog and Francine Bloch published in the same number of the Nave .
