History

Islands

The first men sought insular situations, in order to protect itself and to defend oneself more easily. The marshes and the many islands being on low Samois, more formerly offered a privileged situation. Today, one can recognize three of them:
  • “the largest Island with the Barbers”, in the middle of the river where formerly a stopping leant (“the Island of Jonchère” united with that with the Barber by the service of the Bridges and Chaussées at last century).
  • “the Island of the Cradle”, very close to Bas-Samois attached upstream and downstream by a bridge renovated out of concrete… A Avau-ground (or Avaut-ground) out of dead water covered with a named bridge of " Bridge of Avaut-terre" makes it possible the current water to maintain an opening narrow between the two grounds.
  • “the Island of Thérouenne” (or Thiérouante), close to Right Bank of the commune of Héricy is still guessed (vis-a-vis the stage of the Tuft and downstream) but starts to be filled by the cluster of vases, reeds and sometimes of household waste ...... thus to amalgamate, with the dry land.

The Gallic wood bridge

The commercial relations between two banks of the the Seine required the creation of a “large bridge”. A bridge out of wooden was built between Bas-Samois (vis-a-vis the street of low Samois) and Héricy, resting in its medium on the Island of Jonchère. Thus, one of the bridges was made up longest which existed on the Seine (it had more than 300 meters), between Montereau and Evry.

The Roman stone bridge

The Roman , Masters of the country, needing a strategic and colonizing passage, used and replaced the destructible wood bridge, by a stone bridge. It would be with the emperor Julien that one would like to allot construction, but the long reign of Constance Chlorinates, of 393 with 306, appears much more favourable with the execution of such an important work. The “stone bridge of Samois” was rebuilt in XIIe century, to create royal main road of Melun, Moret-sur-Loing and Montereau. At the time Samois named Samosius or Samusius

It was found with Héricy in burials, currencies with the effigies of Néron, of Marc-Aurèle, Constantin Ier and others; what confirms that the Romains were installed on two banks of the the Seine.

A trade and crossing point

The presence of this bridge explains why Jeanne d' Arc passed by Samois when she wanted to cross the Seine to go Vaucouleurs to Chinon.
