The SAMCEF software

''' the SAMCEF software ''' ( S ystème for the has nalyse M ilieux C ontinus by E léments F inis) is a Progiciel of calculation by finite elements developed as from 1965 with the Université of Liege (Laboratory of the Aeronautical and Space Techniques) by professors B.M. FRAEIJS OF VEUBEKE (1917-1976) and G. SANDER (1937-1987) at the time of a contract with the US Air Force.

The history of the SAMCEF software merges with that of the finite elements. Since 1955, Professor Argyris (University of Stuttgart) develops the matric methods (method of the forces then method of displacements) of analysis of the structures.

At the same time, Richard V. Southwell develops a kinematic membrane which can be regarded as the first finite element. In 1956, Ray W. Clough presents a new element which is the triangular plate kinematically acceptable.

In 1962, the Université of Liege starts to very quickly exempt courses of theory of the structures then the theory of the finite elements, according to the theoretical developments of this method. Always in 1962, the professor FRAEIJS OF VEUBEKE proposes a principle of the mixed type variational and works on the elements " équilibre". In 1964, Ray W. Clough develops the kinematic theory and FRAEIJS OF VEUBEKE the theory " équilibre". The hybrid theory will be introduced in 1967 by H.T.H. Pian.

In 1965, within the framework of a contract US Air Force for the dual analysis, is born a static calculation programme called ASEF. Upon the departure, it was of a trace program of the structures (elements of bar, beams, membranes and plates) and not about a matric trace program (code beam improved and nouveau riche). This point is fundamental for the evolution of the software because the beams are connected by their nodes and the degrees of freedom are thus placed there. The elements " équilibre" connect themselves by the edges (transmission of flow of constraints) from where concept of degrees of freedom of interface. This makes it possible to enrich the polynomial field without refining the grid: it is the method p. the SAMCEF software is, still the only great code to today have out of standard this possibility.

Always in 1964, the concept of finite elements isoparametric is introduced by Zienkiewicz thus giving to the finite element method a considerable rise.

It is during the Sixties that Nastran is born in the United States. Its development is largely financed within the framework of the space projects of the time. The other great software appears for their part more tardily: 1976 for Systus and 1978 for Ansys. This year there, FRAEIJS OF VEUBEKE and SANDER develop the first plate " équilibre" , the membrane having been presented 4 years earlier.

the SAMCEF software was the first software and, on certain points, is still only, in the following fields:

  • elements " équilibre" (since 1965),

  • hybrid elements (since 1980),
  • frontal method by substructures,
  • terminals of error in dynamics after a static condensation,
  • degrees of freedom of interface (variable degrees),
  • composite (since 1975),
  • thermal calculations by finite elements (1972),
  • flexible mechanisms,
  • nonlinear calculations,
  • technical dual in mathematical programming (Opti),
  • reliable Algorithm of Lanczos (since 1978).

Since 1986, it is developed, marketed by the company SAMTECH whose seat is with Liege (Belgium) what does of it one of the last codes computer developed in Europe. It is composed of several modules making it possible to treat the majority of the problems of thermomechanical - ASEF, DYNAM, MECHANIC, THERMAL, ROTOR… being articulated around an interface of pre and post SAMCEF_Field treatment. It comprises also a manager of application for the parametric analyzes, optimization, retiming - Quattro BOSS.

Since 2001, the code EuroPlexus offers a solution clarifies intern who comes to enrich the possibilities by treatment.
