The Rock

the Rock is a common French, located in the department of the Lot and the area the Midday-Pyrenees.

Geography

the Rock is located in the abandoned part of a meander of the alluvial plain of the the Dordogne, downstream from Souillac on left bank of the river (the lowest altitude 84 m). Part of the communal territory is located on the calcareous plate which dominates of more than two hundred meters the valley (the highest altitude 324 m).

The essence of the activity is agriculture (corn, tobacco, walnut trees). The commune is also used as residence with credits working in Souillac.Les other activities are reduced: a bar in the borough, a camp-site, an inn and a factory of boats for the fishermen are installed in the hamlet of Mareuil in the valley of Tournefeuille.

History

  • the presence of a Celtic oppidum is attested on a rocky outcrop dominating the borough and the valley (work of Armand Viré).
  • In the hamlet of Mareuil, the vestiges of a feudal tower and a medieval village testify to the fastening of this place to the seigniory of Mothe Fénelon, powerful peerage-book family of the Quercy and the Périgord.
