The Robins
The Robins is a vocal group of Rhythm and Blues and American Doo-wop active of 1949 to 1956, which will become then The Coasters.
Initially called A-Sharp Trio , the group is recruited with Los Angeles by chief-of orchestra Johnny Otis which sought a formation of doo-wop, the new music with the mode. Composed of the tenor soloist, Carl Gardner, of powerful baritone-low Bobby Nunn and the tenor Obie Young Jessie, the group renamed The Robins records some 78 turns before meeting the composer-songwriters Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller, who engages them on their label Sparks Records. Accompanied by Richard Berry, they obtain their first tube in 1954: Riot In The Concealment Block Number Nine , followed Smokey Joe' S Coffee . But Leiber and Stoller join Atlantic in 1955 and three musicians of Robins leave the group. Robins change identity then and become The Coasters.
The piece Riot In The Cell Block No.9 will be taken again by Coasters in 1971, Wanda Jackson (1961), and by the Blues Brothers.
