the Robber is a Film French of Louis Malle left in 1967.
Synopsis
One night, Georges Randal, whereas he burglarizes a villa, reconsiders with his career of robber. Orphan under the supervision of his uncle, it returns to Paris once his finished studies, where it thinks of marrying Charlotte, his cousin. Only its disillusions await it: the uncle diverted his fortune and his/her cousin is promised with another. At the time of the evening of engagement, by spite and revenge, it flies of the jewels and flees. Charlotte knows the identity of the robber, but does not say anything. In the train which moves away it from there, it finds the abbot the Curbstone met at the time of the evening, which, in addition to its priesthood, directs a band of gangsters, with Brussels. The parallel activities of the abbot are intended to help the missionaries in China. He introduces Georges to Roger Shame, burglar highly skilled who becomes his professor. As its experiment and its fame continue, it becomes an important figure of the shady mediums. At the time of a political meeting with Dieppe, it meets Canonnier, an anarchistic which escaped from the Bagne of Devil's Island. This last informs him of its convictions and proposes to him a fabulous blow, but at the time when it leaves the meeting, Canonnier is recognized by agents and is killed. Charlotte joined Georges with London and becomes her mistress. With died of the uncle félon, Georges, helped of the abbot the Curbstone which now dreams to settle in China, a spurious will which designates it as co-heir of all its fortune, with Charlotte manufactures.

Louis Malle freely took as a starting point the book of Georges Darien, novelist engaged against the parliamentarism, the clericalism, the Militarisme, the Colonialisme, etc the scenario writer makes a very personal reading of it while being identified with the character of Randal; it noted itself these common points: even social origin, even revolt against the preserving middle-class woman, even desire of rupture and destruction. the Robber is not that a film of adventure, it is also a reflection on the capacity and the money. On his side, Jean-Paul Belmondo declares in connection with his role: “ He initially becomes robber by spite then the remainder by pleasure. ”
