The Rhone-and-Loire

The department of the Rhone-and-Loire is old a department French, whose chief town was Lyon. It draws its name from the the Rhone and the the Loire.

It was one of the 83 departments created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790 pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, starting from part of the provinces of Lyonnais, Beaujolais and Forez.

This department was composed of six districts:

This department had a very short history, since into 1793, following the rising of the town of Lyon against the national Convention, it was divided into two departments, the the Rhone (Lyons and Beaujolais wine) and the the Loire (Forez).

The August 12th 1793, a decree, taken at the general headquarter of the Armed with the Alps close to Lyon, decided the partition of the department. One wanted to thus reduce the influence of Lyon in rebellion by withdrawing from his authority the districts of Montbrison, Roanne and Saint-Etienne, thus cutting it his back-country.

This partition was officialized by the approval of national Convention the November 19th 1793 (29 brumaire year II).
