The Ransom of death

Etienne of Blois and Mathilde Emperesse dispute the throne of England. With the beginning of the year 1141, Ranulf, count de Chester, take the castle of Lincoln. King Etienne besieges the castle at once. But of the reinforcements of the party of Mathilde besiege it in its turn. February 2nd, 1141, king Etienne is made prisoner. Triumphing Mathilde can enter London, but it causes the revolt of the inhabitants. Besieged soon in Winchester, it must flee, and Robert de Gloucester, his half-brother is made prisoner by covering his escape. One process then with an exchange of the two men.
This episode transposed to a lower hierarchical level, by Ellis Peters, offers to brother Cadfael, a new enigma to be solved. At the time of the battle of Lincoln, Gilbert Prescote, sheriff of Shrewsbury, party of Etienne, are also made prisoner, not by the men of Mathilde, but by Welsh, combatant for their own account, thinking only of the spoils. However here that a few kilometres from Shrewsbury, a Welsh noble young person, misled in a band of plunderers, falls between the hands from the inhabitants from the county. It is brought to Shrewsbury and an exchange of the two prisoners is arranged. But one of both dies, assassinated with the infirmary of the abbey. In a delicate context, Cadfael brother must identify the culprit.
