the Raft of the Jellyfish is a film French, carried out by Iradj Azimi with Jean Yanne and Claude Jade, left on the screens in 1998, inspired of the true story of the shipwrecked men of the Jellyfish and of the creation of the table of Géricault.

Synopsis

1816. After Waterloo, Louis XVIII is reinstalled on the throne of France. Of Rochefort share for the Senegal the frigate “the Jellyfish”, under the orders of the commander Chaumareys (Jean Yanne), with on his board the future governor of Senegal, Julien Schmaltz (Philippe Laudenbach), accompanied by its wife Queen (Claude Jade) and by their daughter (Stéphanie Lanoux). Very quickly the climate of this official forwarding takes care of suspicion and hatred. Tensions between Chaumareys and lieutenant Coudein (Daniel Mesguich) burst. The traditional festival of the passage of the Tropic is very tended. Coudein was relieved and replaced by a civilian, Richefort (Victor Garrivier), but what he feared produces: the stranding on the bench of Arguin. The boat should be left. The family of Schmaltz and the faithful ones of Chaumareys pile up on five boats with veil, which tow a raft built with haste, occupied per a hundred and forty soldiers and sailors, of which Coudein and Savigny. Richefort cuts the rope and gives up the raft….

  • This film contains an historical error: the house which floats on the Méduse should be entirely white (French house) and not sown white of flowers of gold lily (as one sees it in film), who is the house that one hoists when a prince of the royal family is on board, which was not the case.

  • This film is a work of fiction and does not claim with the historical veracity contrary to the project which Michel Hanniet with " had had; Veracious history of the shipwrecked men of Méduse". Under this same title it made appear a book of 600 pages at Actes Sud in 1991. This book being exhausted, Michel Hanniet has just made publish by the Ancre editions of marine: " The shipwreck of the Jellyfish, words of rescapés". This work contains many news and corrects the inaccuracies and the racist prejudices contained in the too famous relation " arrangée" by Corréard.

The bibliography of the research task carried out by Michel Hanniet counts 182 titles of writings and caused various works having the shipwreck of the Jellyfish for subject or source of inspiration.
