the Professional singer bald person received a Molière of honor in 1989.
Genesis of the part
The idea of the part came in Ionesco when it tried to learn the English by the means of the method Assimil. Struck by the content of the dialogs, at the same time very sober and strange, it decides to write a part Absurde entitled English without sorrow . It is only after a Lapsus, at the time of a repetition, that the title of the part is fixed: the actor who played the Pompier, was to speak, in a very long tirade, of a fair teacher… who became a “professional singer bald person” .Ionesco takes as a starting point the Assimil method, but in Notes and counter-notes , he explains why the absurdity came to be added again to the simple copy of the handbook of training. Thus, Mr. Smith declares that the week has three days: “Tuesday, Thursday and Tuesday” . The absurdity becomes the engine of the part, because Ionesco has the project “to enlarge the strings of the theatrical illusion” .
History
To summarize the part is an almost impossible thing so much the absurdity is omnipresent. However, one can release a pretense of history:Smith, traditional family London, receive Martin. The captain of the firemen visits them. This one recognizes in Mary, their good, an old friend.
This work wants to be an autopsy of the contemporary company, by the means of the ridiculous remarks and banals which the two couples make with the corner of fire.
Is the height of the absurdity reached when the fireman asks for “And the professional singer bald person?” and that one answers him “It is capped always in the same way!” .
Characteristics of the part
Part absurdity par excellence, it is all the same interesting to stop on several points:- the relations between the characters can be interpreted by the setting in scene, and in turn, they will be the women who will become accessory or Smith against Martin… At any time, it is not possible to release a stable relation between two characters. Even the relation between the fireman and the good one is punctuated by a “Releases me!” .
- the sentences of the last scene, in spite of their apparent disconnection, are connected all the same by certain features, without to make coherent the passage.
- the humor which, a priori , was not the initial goal of the author is quite present.
Putting out of order the language while placing it in situations which make absurd the significances from there, Ionesco manages to denounce the factitious character of the social practices, and the nonsense even of the world where the man is thrown without knowing the direction of his life and without recourse to God. The clock shows that all is put out of order and Mrs and Mr. Smith, very common name in England, speak anything to say, without really listening itself. The absurdity of Ionesco, it is the astonishment in front of the daily newspaper, the alleviating banality of the beings.
