Comment

the Prince of Egypt takes as a starting point the life of Moïse such as she is reported in the book of the Exode, chapters 1 to 20.

In January 1999, the film was interdict with the Îles Maldives by the supreme council of the Islamic businesses, because Moïse, as a messenger of God, recognized by Islam, cannot be represented, and in Malaysia, without official justification.

The Dreamworks studios announced to have consulted nearly 600 experts in religion in order to obtain a scenario faithful to the text and respectful of its gasoline. anthropologists, historians and archeologists were also put at contribution, with an aim, inter alia, to give to the characters physical characteristics " scientifically valides".

Actually, this film falls under a debate polemizes American concerning the ethnic membership of the Egyptians of the antiquity who, for certain members of the community Afro-américain E, were black.
On can be astonished by the large-variation which this film constitutes which announces a scientific search of validity (without venturing less world to test the Historicité of the Bible) but which, in same time, constitutes an illustration of the biblical texts at the very least naive, conventional and rather insulting towards the Pharaonic civilization whose beliefs are scoffed and whose manners are described in a way closer to the film the Ten Commands than of than learn to us from the direct sources like the investigations of Hérodote.

Apart from the religious or ideological questions which are tackled there, the Prince of Egypt is a dynamic film of adventures and well rate/rhythm, escaping the gun disneyien by a character original design innovating and visual effects. Initially, the producers of film announced it as being a cartoon intended for a public having a certain maturity (it was an even question of prohibiting it with less than 13 years in the United States), corresponding to positioning maketing of DreamWorks.

This intention as well as dissatisfactions various that the film caused (defendant to be a form of catechism historically absurd by some and shown on the contrary to have taken freedoms with the Bible by others) have led so that its success financial remains modest, since, if one takes into account the enormous publicity expenses which entourré its exit, the Prince of Egypt cost about as much as it paid.

The “adult” character of film however did not convince everyone. Comparing with the Disney productions, Jerome Larcher (Books of the cinema) in said: “one finds the same stereotypes, an idea of the world as simplistic as at the competitor. Not what thus to shout with the genius or to praise the innovation” .

Anecdote

As in the Ten Commands , it is a single actor who lends his voice to Moïse and God.
