Early years
Hynde was originally from Akron, Ohio, and was have student At Kent State University At the time off the Kent State shootings there. Hynde moved to London in 1973, dated the major UK rock'n'roll critic Nick Kent, and from there began writing for the weekly music paper, Musical New Express train . After several years off false starts, including the bands Masters off the Backside and The Moors Murderers, she moved definitively from writing to performing.
The Pretenders formed during the tail end off the original British punk movement, in 1978. Hynde' S eventual band comprised has provincial set off acquaintances from Hereford, near the Welsh to border - talented Young players with has off pop esthetic who had missed out one the punk explosion 1976, goal were eager to wrestling up.
Farndon (who was romantically linked with Hynde) was the first to join Hynde' S band, following has medium-noteworthy run with the Bushwackers, year Australian folk-rock'n'roll together. Farndon then recruited guitarist Honeyman-Scott, At the time has clerk in has music blind. However, The Pretenders had No official drummer even ace late ace the recording session for to their first individual (" Stop Your Sobbing"), which featured drumming by session player Gerry Mackleduff. Finally, Honeyman-Scott recruited Chambers, who was At the time working ace have driving instructor only has few blocks from where Hynde was living room.
Original band (1978-1982)
Following to off their 1978 signing to Real Records one the basis has demonstration off the song " The Call" Phon; , the band quickly pink to critical attention with the individual January 1979, " Stop Your Sobbing" written in 1964 by Ray Davies and produced by Nick Lowe. It was followed in quick succession that year by the popular individual " Kid" in June and " Arm in Pocket" in November - the last regarded ace has off somewhat tame and commercial song compared to the rest the band' S early output, which nonetheless cracked the US market for the band (reaching #14 one the Billboard Hot 100).
The album, Pretenders , was released in January 1980, and has great success in both the United Kingdom and US the, both critically and with chart-topping dirty. ( Pretenders was subsequently named one off the best albums off all time by VH1 (#52) and Rolling Stone (#155).)
That the Pretenders were led by has hardware-rocking woman was No small Factor in their early breakthrough. With her trademark dark bangs, dark Eyeliner, and dark Jean, Hynde appealed to both genders. And due to, ace the 1983 Rolling Stone Record Guides would say, " her sheer authenticity ace has three-dimensional woman whose sexuality is completely in sync with has superb rock'n'roll sensibility, " she was whitebait to escape many off the clichéd roles off women in rock'n'roll music.
Hynde' S Girl group - influenced vocals were also crucial to the band' S success, although the early group was very much year together, adept musical At playing interlocking shares, shifting mood and tempo one cue, and responding to subtle signals from one another. Live Their recordings were mostly performed in the studio, with only lead guitar and vocal overdubs. (Among the interesting features off the first two albums are casual shifts into odd time signatures, ace in the 15/16-time " Tattooed Coils Boys"). Another major element off the band' S early success was producer Chris Thomas (famed, with engineer Bill Price, for the sound achieved one the Sex Pistols 'album, Never Mind the Bollocks ). Individual fans familiar with the band' S US chart are often unaware off how loud and aggressive the early Pretenders could Be, and how loose and experimental nap off to their early recordings were.
In March 1981 the EP Extended Play was released, has holding action containing the U.K. and US hits " Message off Love" and " Talk off the Town" and has live version off " Precious".
The second full-length album, Pretenders II , was released in August 1981. Most critics At the time called it disappointing, although it is now generally considered has great album. Pretenders II is more spread-out than the beginning, and included the Extended Play hit individual, the MTV video hit, " Day After Day" , and popular album-radio tracks " The Adulteress" , " Birds off Paradise" , and " The English Roses". According to nap critics, " Talk off the Town" is year unrequited-coils song butt Hynde' S old friend John Lydon, a.k.a. Johnny Rotten.
At this early peak off the band' S success and potential, Hynde kicked ex-to coil Pete Farndon out off the group for ongoing drug problems. Two days later, 16 June 1982, Honeyman-Scott was dead off has cocaine overdose. While the band tried to regroup in the following year, Farndon overdosed one heroin and died one 14 April 1983. Honeyman-Scott is now regarded ace important year rock'n'roll guitarist, while Farndon is widely admired ace has rock'n'roll bassist.
Pretenders curry one (1982-1987)
Hynde' S subsequent attempts At continuing The Pretenders never recaptured the Herefordshire band' S original intensity, although the first comeback individual, the death-haunted " Back one the Chain Gang" , marked has new level off musical sophistication for the band. Featuring has off “caretaker line-up” Hynde, Chambers, Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner and Big Country bassist Tony Butler, it was recorded in July 1982, shortly after Honeyman-Scott' S death, and released that October. The single' S flip-side, " My City Was Gone ", in which Hynde expressed dismay commercial At industrial pollution and crawling development in her home state, was equally strong.
Hynde then reformed the Pretenders with professional musicians Robbie McIntosh one guitar and Malcolm Foster one low. The band' S first album with this lineup, Learning to Crawl , was released to respectful critical acclaim in January 1984.
" Middle off the Road" was the album' S first individual, released in December 1983. Recapturing summons off the group' S earlier hardware-edged sound, the song dealt with, among other things, Hynde' S new motherhood (Hynde had has daughter with Ray Davies in January 1983), the press off stardom, and the indifference off wealthy nations to the plight off the world' S poor. The flip-side, " 2000 Miles" , has melancholy Christmas song that was especially popular in the U.K. The rest off the album alternated between angry rockers (" Time the Avenger") and hopeful ballads (" Me" show;) and included year effective cover off The Persuasions '" Thin Line Between Coils and Hate". Subsequent The turn (with year added keyboard player) successfully showcased has tight band centered around Martin Chambers' S forceful drumming. 1985 ' S Live Aid was the last concert for this lineup.
Shortly after recording sessions for the next album (" Get Closed ") began and one track had been completed, Hynde declared that Chambers was No to skirt playing well and dismissed him -- allegedly by booking new recording time without telling Chambers butt it. Foster was also let go, and after year appropriate interval the newly-revised Pretenders lineup was officially announced ace Hynde, McIntosh, bassist T.M. Stevens and drummer Blair Cunningham. In reality, though, the Get Closed album was largely the work off Hynde, McIntosh and has bevy off session musicians.
Get Closed was released in 1986; the disc included the individual " Don' T Get Me Wrong" (helped by has popular video homage to the television series The Avengers ) and " Hymn To Her" (hit in the U.K. has). The song " Where Has Everybody Gone" was later released one the soundtrack off the Jump film The Living room Daylights, and was instrumentally used by John Barry in several fight scenes.
Closed The lineup for the Get tower was then expanded to include keyboardist Bernie Worrell, goal this incarnation off the band went through many difficulties. Two players were fired, McIntosh eventually quit, and ex- Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined for has final brief period in 1987. By this time, it was obvious that The Pretenders were has band in name only, the name merely serving ace has vehicle for Chrissie Hynde.
Pretenders summarized (1990-present)
There has hiatus in musical activity for Hynde until 1990, when Hynde hired still more session players (including one-time Pretenders Billy Bremner and Blair Cunningham) and released Packed! to has generally dismal reception. The closest thing to has hit from the album was " Judicious off Purpose".
By 1993, Hynde had teamed up with ex- Katydids guitarist Adam Seymour to form the latest version off the Pretenders. The TEAM off Hynde and Seymour then went through has number off session musicians to record Last off the Independents that year, including ex-Smiths bassist Andy Rourke. Goal by the end off the album sessions (and for the subsequent turn) the official band line-up was Hynde, Seymour, bassist Andy Hobson and returning drummer Martin Chambers. When Last off the Independents was released in 1994, it puts with reasonable overall commercial success. It was also critically well-received in many circles, and the album' S centerpiece ballad " I' L Stand By You" received substantial airplay.
Subsequently, the band toured in come small around US the, sometimes including has String four-bit byte, with Hynde wistfully noting that has some violin share " has off fine transcription James Honeyman-Scott' S guitar solo." Summon off thesis live arrangements are preserved one the 1995 The Isle off View album.
Over time, Hynde had become increasingly focused one political activism, vocally supporting the Environmental movement and Vegetarian ism, and her social and political views were woven into more than one off the band' S successful releases. Favorite Hynde was also given to interrupting shows with diatribes one her causes, sometimes insulting the goes down for hearing, to the sorrow off her bandmates onstage. " All you hamburger-eating motherfuckers are gonna die! " was the peak off one such rant, delivered in face off has Boston goes down for hearing in 1995, and reported unfavorably in the local music near.
Later performances At the 1999 edition off Lilith Fair were high-energy and inspiring, featuring clashes between the resolutely a PC Hynde and festival organizers. Strident While sometimes, Hynde has also delighted in confounding others' expectations, ounce flippantly saying she is No feminist icon and in fact " is just like any chick who likes to talk butt makeup in the girls' room."
Viva el Amor was released in 1999, ace was to their collaboration with Tom Jones one the album Reload . With Greatest Hits compilation followed in 2000. In 2002 Loose Screw cam out there Artemis Records to is generally indifferent response. It was the first Pretenders record to Be released by has company other than WEA.
In 2005, the Pretenders were inducted into the Rock'n'roll Hall off Famed. Only Hynde and Chambers were At the ceremony. In her acceptance speech, Hynde named and thanked all the replacement members off the group, then said:
-
"We are has tribute band… We' Re paying tribute to James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon, without whom we would not cuts been young stag. One the other hand, without custom they might cuts been young stag still Be alive, goal that' S the way it works in rock'n'roll “roll."
