The Press of the English Channel

the Press of the English Channel is a Quotidien departmental French whose seat is with Cherbourg-Octeville (Manche). It radiates primarily on North Cotentin.

The newspaper was founded with the Libération, the July 3rd 1944, that is to say one week after the release of Cherbourg, under the title of the Press cherbourgeoise . First daily newspaper to be appeared in released France, it takes the continuation of the daily newspaper Cherbourg-Flash , prohibited publication for Collaboration.

the Press of the English Channel appeared for the first time under this title Monday October 5th 1953. It grew rich by a Sunday edition in October 1987, whose geographic coverage is a little broader than that of the daily newspaper. The newspaper was directed a long time by Marc Giustiniani, who modernized it, in particular by making it pass rather early to the offset printing (1977). With its death, it is his wife, born Jeannette Biard, which took the continuation.

The newspaper belongs since February 1990 to the Groupe Ouest-France, by the means of its subsidiary company Sofiouest . It since was successively directed by Emmanuel Hutin, then, today, by Marcel Clairet.

a world failure . The reputation of the newspaper is sullied by a famous “failure” going back to 1969. Its direction indeed avoided itself revealing the departure, in the five, Christmas Eve high-speed motorboats bought by Israel, in violation of an embargo issued by the general de Gaulle. The newspaper, which had had information before everyone, could " sortir" the business the morning of December 26th, thus honouring itself with a world exclusiveness. The chairman of the Press of the English Channel Marc Giustiniani refused there, against the opinion of his drafting, pretexting his personal links with the manufacturer, the building sites Felix Amiot, and the wrong which this revelation was supposed to establish to him. The business was finally revealed by a dispatch of the central Agence of press (ACP) in the afternoon of December 26th, before being begun again by the radios and televisions, and the following day, Saturday, December 27, in the newspapers of the whole world. the Press of the English Channel yielded then. But, not appearing then Sunday, it could give information only in its edition of the Monday, December 29, after all the press had abundantly treated it.

The newspaper attenuated this dishonor while revealing in 1986 a traffic of weapons in the commercial port, “the Affaire Luchaire”.
