the Press , founded in 1884, is a daily Montreal board (Quebec, Canada) published by Gesca, a subsidiary company of Power Corporation.

Description

It is about a newspaper of language French E published the every day of the week. The leading line of the newspaper is in favor of the Canadian Fédéralisme , but leaves the place to all the spectrum of the opinions.

The newspaper contains several specialized sections: new international main roads and, arts and spectacles, sports and books sets of themes.

Its direct candidates are the Newspaper of Montreal , which aims at a more popular assistantship, and the Duty , nationalist and more intellectual.

History

It was founded the October 20th 1884 by William-Edmond Blumhart. Trefflé Berthiaume becomes it leading in 1889. Its newspaper exceeds soon the Fatherland in pulling.

In April 1901, the direction organizes a “Cruising of the Press” towards Quebec. The newspaper organized also a Charité named the Work of the New Year's gifts to the poor children .

An illustration on first page of the December 3rd 1904 celebrated the 50e birthday the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate-Design. Indeed, the use was then to put an illustration instead of a photograph on the page titrates.

The May 3rd 1922, it announced to have installed in its offices the most powerful station of Radiotéléphonie of America. The radio station CKAC is created the October 2nd according to.

The typographers of the Press begin a long strike the June 3rd 1964. It finishes only the December 23rd, nearly six months later. The competitor daily newspaper the Newspaper of Montreal is launched during this strike. Gerard Pelletier is the editor association of the newspaper of 1961 with 1965.

Of 1972 with 1980, the newspaper was chaired and published by Roger Lemelin, writer of profession. Roger D. Landry then directed the newspaper during 20 years.

The presentation of the newspaper changed much during the 20th century. It underwent a graphic replanning complete in November 1986, and another in 2003.

Raymond Guerin, humorous chronicler, wrote a Ode with the Press in which it enumerates the characters whose newspaper was pilot: Yvon Robert, the Family Soucy, the Abbot Warré, Bolduc, the Sisters Dionne, Dawn, the child martyrdom, Tit-Cock, Dupuis Brothers, Jean-Guy Moreau, J.J. Since 1984, the Press honors a personality with the year. In the past, it honoured Julie Payette, Daniel Langlois and Gaetan Boucher. The same year, the newspaper launched a book memorial to celebrate its hundredth birthday. A similar book was published in 1999 at the Éditions the Press to point out the events of the 20th century.

The leading line of the press was, during the twenty-five last years, constantly to go to the defense of the Fédéralisme. Thus, the newspaper decided against the sovereignty of Quebec at the time of the Référendum S of 1980 and 1995. The newspaper also gave an opinion in favor of federalistic parties at the time of each election. The Press is however a newspaper which supports the debates and the diversity of opinions. Apart from the leading page, the chroniclers (columnists) have whole freedom to express their opinions, even if they are contrary with the leading line.

André Pratte is at present the leader-writer as a chief. He wrote that in 1967, the newspaper had taken a position in favor of the Constitution of Canada. The leading line supported the Grève Québécois coed of 2005 and the merry Mariage with the Canada but was opposed to the second war of the Gulf.

In addition, Pierre Foglia writes chronicles on the Québécois company and the Tour de France. Judith Lachapelle gained the price Judith-Jasmine for its reports over the food bio. Stephan Laporte writes Winks on first page and humorous chronicles of Sunday, which speak its childhood especially. Denis Lessard, Joel-Denis Bellavance and Tommy Chouinard write political articles.

Since 2001, with the arrival in station of the editor Guy Crevier, the daily newspaper undertook a recasting: modernization of its model, creation of new books sets of themes, increase in the international cover, etc It also took a turn raises by making place with young collaborators.
