The Pope (Hugo)

the Pope is a Poème of Victor Hugo.

At the same time critical satirist of the papacy and exposed religious and human thought of the poet, work is introduced like a “dream in two scenes”. It appeared the April 29th 1878, but in fact had been almost entirely written in 1874 - 1875, in the continuation of the Anticléricalisme crescent of the author and the news III {{E}} République, and in reaction inter alia to the principle of the pontifical Infaillibilité established in 1870.

Composition

The first scene shows the Pope falling asleep after a long time having sought the sleep. He sees himself then dreams some, rejecting the dogmas of the Catholic church to return to the purity of the Christ, good towards the weak ones and the poor and intransigent towards the powerful ones, incarnation of the human condition. In one second concise scene, the Pope awakes, terrified to have made such a nightmare…
