The Pleasure of blood
Via the character of Vampire female Sonia Blue, Nancy Hakes, author of the Pleasure of blood calls into question the origin of the vampires.
Process of transformation
The process of transformation differs in two major points.Firstly, the gift of immortality is transmitted by saliva through the bite, or by sperm, and not by blood.
Then, the vampire does not have anything any more the mortal who it was before. This is explained by the intrusion in the dead-man of a minor demon, whose presence will produce the transformation and will give its new nature, physics, genetics and mental, to its host.
Characteristics
Nancy Collins gave a new breath to its characters of vampire since it equipped them with characteristics more important than in other authors, Anne Rice for example. It moves away from the traditional model but makes also the character more complex and thus more attracting. It initially set up a hierarchy. If the carnal envelope is little occupied of time after the bite, the vampire will resemble an human being; but if the body remains unoccupied for a long time, it will resemble a zombie or goule, stupid, called “returning”. The powerful vampires, those which monopolized a brain more evolved/moved, are called the Noble ones. Each Noble can have a race. This race becomes independent only after decades, when their capacity increases. The suckers chosen preferably are the human weak ones. Wars can be declared between Nobles which sends their respective races then “to fight”. Gaining climbs then in the hierarchy.
Each vampire is endowed with an innate violence and a force and have the capacity to cure. The Noble ones have the capacity to control the spirits and preferably nourissent the human emotions, blackest. They do not need thus necessarily human blood. Their reflection appears in the mirrors, but the reflection shows what the Pretenses (see low) really see, their reflection being surrounded of a red halation of light. Lastly, they see the images of last superimposing itself on the present (example: old building of Gestapo, scenes of torture seen in the empty rooms)
The death of the vampire, it, is also revisited. The great day causes itchings and migraines but does not kill. The Noble ones do not fear garlic, the crucifixes, the churches or the money. On the other hand, theNoble ones fear the money. the vampire does not die by a pile in the heart but by the section of the spinal-cord (Achilles' heel of the vampires).
The principal interest of the book lies in the creation of this universe of the also called Pretenses the elementary ones. the Faux-semblants are the creatures of the myths and legends, “deformed beyond any recognition”: vampires , wolves-garous, Incubates S, Succube S, ondine S… They are qualified “stray Children of Géhenne”.
They are identifiable demons lower than the energy convulsions marking their features. They belong to the Real-world. Is this one described in Aegrisomnia of Palinarus at the 14th century (?), a book written by a Pretense with the use of the Pretenses. The elementary spirits reigned on the island which will become the Japan before the time of the first emperor. After their installation in Europe, there was later a strong immigration in North America. Their neutral territory remains in Europe the catacombs of Rome.
They live in the cracks of human perception. In fact, they are not extravagant, and remain discrete in all. They dissimulate their “démoniaque otherness” under a built banality of all parts, from where the term “Pretenses”, to make to pretense being human. They can incarnate and then take a human appearance, or live in a dead human body. They can already have a human appearance.
There exist several categories of Pretenses: Vampire, Vargr, Succube, Incubates, Ogre, Pyrotique, Séraphin.
