The Player

The Player is an American film of Robert Altman, left in 1992.

Synopsis

Griffin Millet, director of production to Hollywood, receives anonymous postcards threatening. It seems that they emanate from an author, whose scenario would have been readjusted. In addition, it fears for its employment, the more so as a defector of competition is engaged, at his sides.

After a short investigation, the name of David Kahane is essential like that of the author of the threats. It goes to its residence to Pasadena, where it has an phone interview with the partner of Kahane, June. He learns that the author is with the cinema to see the Robber of bicycle of Vittorio De Sica. After projection, they meet and in a bar, Mill proposes a collaboration to him. In the street, the discussion envenime, they comes to the hands; Kahane is killed.

Being the last to have spoken with the victim, Mill is heard by the police force which has strong suspicions. It realizes of its error with respect to Kahane when it receives new threats. In parallel, it approaches June, which it met with funerals of the scenario writer. A confrontation is organized by the police force, with a witness who saw the murder, but this one clears it formally. One year later, Mill is at the top of the hierarchy, the Master-singer contacts it for a project of film, which is not other than its own history; it accepts and proposes a title: “ The Player ”.

Comments

The Player is not a film on the Cinéma, but by locating it at Hollywood, that makes it possible Altman to make a not very flattering description of it. The murder of the scenario writer, suspicion with regard to the murderer then his freedom constitutes only one groundwork, being used for painting of the medium. The realizer takes again a fallen through project which joined together James Dearden, Joseph Ruben and Sidney Lumet.
